Sportrak Flatspot

Post by Thompatruck »

Greetings,

I've tried the locals, now i'm looking internationally for help!

I've got a '96 Sportrak Anjou 1.6ELXi (That's a Feroza/Rocky to the non British!) and at about 3000 rpm I get a flat spot in the acceleration, yes I do have that big black box slapped on the top of my engine (which i'm told is supposed to solve that problem) but I'm not sure whether it works or not.

My questions are?

What is the 'black box'?
How does it work?
How can it be tested?
Is that my problem?

Any help appreciated :)

Cheers

Hi and welcome.

I doubt the black box could cause your problems- it's just a resonant chamber AFAIK. It was only introduced to improve the torque curve at low revs.

There are numerous things that could cause it including:
1. the TPS (throttle position sensor) on the throttle body
2. distributor problems - the timing is controlled by springs, weights etc. - not the EFI computer
3. fuel supply problems- check you fuel flow and pressures
4. the EFI computer
5. dirty injectors

Maybe start checking as many of them as possible yourself. Have you downloaded the engine manual?- that is a big help for checking out most things I've mentioned.
