Timing on Rover V8

Post by walker »

I have just finished fitting the 4.6l short motor to the Rangie. I have kept the WW stromberg carby. I have set the timing at 6degrees BTDC but it still seems to run out of puff at higher revs.

Before I go mucking about with the timing any more I just wanted to see if anyone else is running a 4.6 with Carby and what you have set the timing at.
I am thinking that it may not be a timing problem but that the carby cannot give enough fuel flow at higher revs. I have the same jets as out of a 4.4l.

Any recomendations? At some stage i would like to get it tuned by a professional but being just after Christmas I have no money at the moment.
Thanks,

Adam

to see if the problem is the spark timing you could always advance the dizzi a heap. (until it starts detonating). back it off until the rattle stops (+a bit). If it has made a noticable difference at high revs, you know this could be the problem.

this is the method i use to set the timing on my holden six. Although to be safe, put it back to the factory timing marks after you do the above check.

Ok, the problem seems to be timing. I advanced the timing to about 18 degrees BTDC and it ran a heap better and just sounded better.

Could the distributor be worn or something causing it to look like it is far advanced when it is not really. I would not expect it to run at 18 degrees BTDC or at least it would ping a lot...it did not ping at all.

And I have checked my TDC mark and it is correct.
Thanks,

May be the harmonic balancer has slipped? when you say the tdc mark was correct, did you actually check it against the piston?
