Who has welded their daihatsu diff(s)??

Post by RockyF75 »

....................and wants to help me weld mine

After reading through pages of search, resulting in a considerable headache, i've decided its a go. Not in a huge hurry, wanna make sure it is done right so would luve as much advice and input as possible from people who have done it.

Also, welding the front would mean that when the hubs are unlocked, the welded centre doesn't affect driving at all???

And, if i blow my front diff and or axles, can i still drive the car on road in 2wd (assuming i get out of wherever i blow em :D ) - i'm just thinking worst case scenario as the rock is my daily driver so cant afford to have it off the road whilst i chase spare diffs/axles.

AAAAnnnnd.... does anyone have a spare 84 rocky diff centre or complete front end they want to offload so i have a spare??

But mostly would like to see pics of what bits to weld, and what they are called. In the search i did there is great detail of what to weld but its all technical so i cant match names with stuff :? (like, which parts are the spider gears, pinion, etc etc)

cheers

Chatto has his front diff welded in his Feroza, goes great. He only had it done by chance. When he brought the Feroza front diff was already screwed. So it was cheaper to weld than to replace diff. He has taken it out a few times already it goes over stuff alot easier. I still have reservations on how long it will last, either break weld or strip CV's. However he drives pretty cautious so should last a long time. It is alot too weigh up because the last thing you want is too spend the money on welding it than something breaks because of it. Still planning to do mine. His cost $300 from a mechanic at Nerang on the Gold Coast try to get mine done in Feb. Let us know how you go.

Just do it!

Haven't got mine in atm ...long story, but you'll find you can crawl over obstacles easier without so much right foot, which actually makes it easier on your CV's.

If you bust something in the front end, then it's same as open diff with same problem... simply go back to 2wd and unlock your hubs.

I was browsing a parts site last night and they had Feroza CV's for only $33 odd ea. Nice and cheap. I imagine Rocky ones would be a similar price for IFS models?

weled 2 bars across the middle to the spider gears above [=]

should only cost around $100 if u take in just the center otherwise they
charge dismantaling etc.

All Aussie Feroza's are part time 4WD and 50:50 split. If you had one rear spinning (and weren't moving in 4WD) you should have had a front wheel spinning too- most likely the diagonally opposite one. That's what normally happens to me when I'm stuck anyway.

yep, i get that too, 2 wheels diagonally opposite in the air or balancing on the 2 that are on the ground like a see-saw :bad-words: , which is why i just want a front CIG. 90% of the time thats y i get stuck, the other 10% is having A/T's in mud  (but locker will help a bit with that too)

I swear I wrote a question asking about the Ferozas center diff, not an answer :D

when i was young and dumb i blow the front diff on my f20(same diff as my f75) i tossed the broken spider gears in the diff centre and welded bit of angle iron to lock it all up. worked cool. dont know if i would pull my rocky diff apart to do it . goto make sure u clean the oil of really good or u will have a hard time welding anything.

welding the rear diff

Post by BajanFeroza »

I welded the rear diff and BOY did it make a different. i was told somewhere that a front diff welded is better for rock climbing and a rear diff welded is better for mud and hills.

Hope this helps.

how much harder does welding the front diff have on the turning capabilities in soft sand with very windy narrow tracks?
i read all the threads ages ago and was all keen to do it seeing i have 2 front diff centers, but then was cautious about it and didnt do it because a lot of people rekon'd it would stuff up (make harder) my ability to flog through the tight sand tracks i used to go through. they said my steering would be a lot harder in tight circumstances...?

my GUESS, would be that it would make it much harder tu turn, using my rear diff as a judge, turning is alot harder.

A welded front diff when 4wd is engaged would be the same as a locker... the car has a tendancy to go straight ahead due to the wheels travelling the same distance as each other... The inside one usually turns less than the outside one when cornering with an open diff... so when they are locked together turning becomes difficult..

People with front lockers usually engage only when the traction is needed and then disengage when they need to turn etc.

hrrmmm.. so a locker would be a much better option then, but a welded diff a much cheaper one. thanks.

been away at my new job (2 weeks out bush on a mine site, yay)... and was chatting to one of the fitters there about welding the front diff and turning/steering changes.
he said he had thought about this with his previous cruiser and said there should be no reason once you have welded the diff of you are in some twisty sand tracks for example and need 'easier' steering then why not jump out just unlock one of the hubs... one wheel will still be in constant drive and the other just free spin in the hub. when you want them both constant, lock the hub back in again. made sense to me.

sound feasable to you guy's? it all made sense to me anyways and has made me deffinatly want to go ahead with the front diff welding. :)

Yep, that's what most people do when they weld the front diff.

However, do you really need a locker if you're driving mostly sand? If you're doing ruts and rocks, etc., then definitely weld it, and unlock one hub when you don't need it.

You'll find welding your front will make HUGE improvements to your rig's capabilities, heaps more so than a locked rear.

yea i do a lot more than just sand driving.
from all i've read about the improved capabilities after a locked front diff it's deffinatly a mod i want to do.

RockyF70, i look forward to seeing pics (if you take any) when you do yours.

i'm super undecided, 1/2 the ppl i talk to make me want to do it tomorrow, and the other 1/2 make me think i'm an idiot for even suggesting it

If i do it it wont be for atleast a few months so will dig this up if/when it happens. 40 V8 on gas is sooo tempting, but i luv my rocky and dont think I have the willpower to save the dosh for a 40

But if i get a locker i'll dispense all thoughts of selling i'm damn sure of that

Welding diff

Post by BajanFeroza »

Funny when i read the reply's most guys mention locking the front wheels/hubs. MINE CANT LOCK, guess its an older model but there is no front hub locking switches :bad-words:

But my welded back diff, works well, hills are sweet, mudy raods are BETTER .....

Two ARB's, 5.71:1, lines, valves and switches run off of CO2...eat your hearts out. I'm waiting on some 5.29's before I put them in as the 5.71:1's that I have now are just a little too low. Hopefully in a few months. Locked and loaded :D

I know...go away
