Picking up my first 4x4 WOO HOO

Post by brett5141 »

Hey Everyone,

Have just had an offer accepted on a 1990 Model Toyota Hilux Surf SSR.

Am very happy, I know these arent a real off road beast but it will be perfect for us to start off roading in and also doing some touring and camping.

Am very happy to finally be getting a 4x4 and hope to very gradually mod it up (got to take it slow to get it past the wife).

I know this does not sound very 4x4 tough of me but i am wondering can anyone tell me what stereo i could put in?

It has a stereo with a cd player in it but is not the best and appears to be what they call double din (not 100%) has anyone changed sound systems in these and what are the best brands to use.

thanks and look forward to seeing some of you out there.

Hey Brett, welcome to the 4x4 club

I have a surf and had the origional unit changed when I bought it, it used to have a double din CD unit in there from factory but that died not to soon after buying it so replaced it with a single din unit and put a UHF underneath, or you can put a pocket in there. Any stereo shop should be able to help out.
If you want some more info on the surfs check out the Surf site, http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au then go to the forum. Great bunch of guys there and all the help you should need.
Good luck
Cheers
Dan.

as long as your happy mate, don't worry about what anyone else thinks. as you said, perfect to learn in. in 5 years time you'll probably be able to pick the best line in any situation because your truck trained you to. it's better to aquire the skills than compensate with mods :D have fun with it

oh and for the stereo gear, i've had great luck with pioneer stuff, personally, and i would look at the lower end range of stuff from any manufacturer, they sound as good as top end stuff that's a few years old (progress of technology), AND in a 4x4 you'll be dealing with lots of dust, and running the risk of getting mud and water into it.

Waterproof speakers in the doors could be handy.
