Noise in gearbox

Noise in gearbox
G'day All,
I'm just curious as to what the cause of a sound in my gearbox could be.
Only ever happens in 5th gear, and only ever over 105km/h. Probably get it about 90% of the time. Doesn't happen whilst accelerating though.
For a description of the noise, is just sounds like a screaming, kinda vibrating noise.
Had a mate of mine in the car one day, and asked him about it, he said he's had the same sort of noise in his Camry for years, and hasn't bothered him at all.
Anyone have any idea???
Cheers

Worn bearings is apparently what's wrong with mine. Makes vibrating noises in certain gears at high revs / loads.
I've been driving it like that for three years now, bascially since I bought it! The rest of the vehicle was immaculate, so I bought it with the thought that I'd be happy if the box last 1-2 years. I run Redline oil in it which has done wonders and always keep in mind that one day it will probably let go....
I found bearing kits for the Feroza box online a while back, no price though?

Isn't there too many other noises to worry about when you're doin 105km/h Floody?? lol
If I do over about 100 in mine, the road noise and engine noise is so loud... i sit on about 90-95km/h on the open roads..
For many gearbox issues a good flush and refill with good quality oil such as Redline Lightweight Shockproof can work wonders as murcod said.

Floody, if you get cold shift issues (ie. grating) then definitely get the Redline stuff. I tried a few other oils and they were basically useless compared to it. Cold morning shifts aren't a problem now.
Only problem is it's a very expensive oil @ ~$33 a litre. I also run it in the wife's Excel now- she was amazed how much better it is to change gears. It's actually better than it was when new; and it's covered 120000km.

I changed the oil only the other week in it, put in Castrol Ican'trememberthenameofthestuffnow Oil, as changes before were becoming very hard to do. Now, it's working wonders and shifts easily again. I'll keep the redline stuff in mind for the next time I change the oil though.
And Hotfour, she sits quite comfortable at that speed on the open road, . All the way around Aus, sat quite consistently on 110, . Maybe you just need some decent tyres mate, .

Good ol VMX80. That stuff kept the 5 spd in my sil80 alive for many years, from all my experience its quite a good oil unless your box is entering its twilight years.
I just checked my service receipt and my mechanic uses Valvoline 75/90 gear oil in my box.. 2.5 litres of it apparently.
I have an odd noise in my gearbox at the moment, its a bang bang bang, not that loud but noticeable when you go over about 4500rpm in 1st or 2nd. The noise goes away if you've got a real good grip on the shifter though!
Almost seems that its actually the gear shifter rattling around. Hope it is as I dont feel like coughing up for a new box 2 months after a new motor !
Anyone else had or got a problem like this?
Cheers

Sounds like mine- if I hold the shifter the noise is reduced. I originally thought it was just an issue with the shifter too, the mechanic I go to said it was the bearings worn and just keep driving it. It's most likely why the previous owner sold mine; mind you, if the idiot had changed the gearbox oil it wouldn't have problems now.....Rb25sil80 wrote:The noise goes away if you've got a real good grip on the shifter though!

Whats wrong with pentrite ??? I've been told Penrite HPR (Diesel) is the best... it certainly is priced that way... and i've used just that for everything.murcod wrote:Wasn't Castrol VMX80 was it? Hopefully not, I tried it and it was not much better than the Penrite stuff that my mechanic had put in. Also made the box very noisy.
60 + Turbo, 33"s
Penrite didn't do my gearbox any favours and was by far the worst oil for gear changes grating. It would most likely be fine in a box that doesn't have any issues. The original oil was like sludge when it was drained (so I was told) but I didn't have cold change issues; put the Penrite in and immediately I had issues. I assume it was the correct viscosity Penrite that was put in by the mechanic.
I'm sold on Redline and will be using it in all my future vehicle's gearboxes.

And after all that time thinking it was in the gearbox.......
It was the exhaust bracket that came off the gearbox, . It was broken, however at the right RPM, it was just vibrating enough to make that disgusting noise, .
Got it welded back together today, and $20 later, I no longer have that noise, .

I believe something is wrong with my left hand engine bracket, because even with a new mount, the mount sits on the chassis, seemingly causing my gearbox to rattle and vibrate the living daylights out of itself.
It is probably even causing all the low level rumbling and harshness in the cabin/gearbox when driving below 2200rpm, that comes and goes when it wants.
I just hope a new bracket/mount will shut the gearbox up.
