HJ 75 89 YEAR UTE the l/h drum break has jamed on tryed to back it off but no go so short of cuting the backing plat off what can i do thanks

Try.....

1. Opening the bleed valve and see if there is any pressure built up.

2. Checking the handbrake cable to see if there is any tension.

3. If your drums have the threaded holes getting 2 bolts and pressing it off the axle flange.

Failing that, dont just slam it with a hammer, get an angle grinder and slice a groove from the rim of the drum down to the flange and then across to the other side and back to the rim, so its straight down the centre. Get a big big chisel and THEN hammer it on the corner so that it splits easy and it will come off in two near perfect halves. Check all the components by stripping them down and making sure everything still moves.

If i remember... if you look on the inside of the drum backing plate.. there is a tiny hole in it.. it has a pin holding a tiny gear thingo which adjusts your brake pads as they wear... you need to loosen that.. and bash the fark outta the drum outside... and possibly use the two holes which look like threaded holes and as if a bolt should go in there.. use a M8 bolt (i think) and bolt them in GRADUALLY to jack the brake drum off carefully as you can strip the thread and bash it with a hammer and it will eventually give way..

hahahaha true. it will be easyer to bust if you drill a few holes in the drum but not where the shoes run or you will drill holes in them too. then just hit it with a sledgy. heaps easyr than fucking with the backing plate. also check the hand brake cable has not seized or somthing stupid.

Stupid question, but have you got a couple of bolts to screw into the holes to force the drum off. Without those, you're pushin' shit uphill. By the sound of it, they'll still be tight when you screw the bolts in, but it WILL come off.

Give the drum plenty of whacking with a big hammer to loosen things up.

Also, to take the springs on your shoes off, and put 'em back on, use a decent pair of side cutters and you'll find drums are quicker and easier to do than disc pads.

the thing that is jamed is the adj screw the thing at the back that you can wind the hand brake on off with that f-----ing thing won,t back off and yes i am using the right tool [ going to lcmp next weekend if i can fix this without to much damage ] thanks for you help.

you mention the adjustment screw - its inside the the brake assembly - sorry from what it sounds like.. is you adjusted the handbrake cable ???? - if im wrong.. sorry mate!!!! just in case... its inside that little hole that sits next to the handbrake lever on the brake drum housing. and you gotta stick a screwdriver in it to push the lever off the gear thingo and turn the gear thingo quite a few times in one direction to reduce the pad pressure on the drum.

that click wheel is only spose to go one way its a real pain to go backwards with it. so you too have a misses that wont back off :twisted:

When I had my landrover I had the same problem. I have a tool that looks like a bend flat blade screw driver, you push it in the hole in the backing plate where the adjuster wheel is and use it to push away the spring loaded lock arm, then you use another screw driver to back the wheel off. The other problem I used to have was getting the actual drums off. There was special threaded holes that you were supposed to put the screws that held the drums on into to force it off, I use a small hand sledge hammer on the outisde of the drum, give it a few bangs and it could be removed by hand....I have never looked at the drums brakes on the back of the XL-7 and the LJ50 drums come off by hand without any issue....they also don't work either :-)

Just try hitting them with a FBH. My bet is the wont let you screww you bolt in both holes to free it. :rofl:
