This is the only one I got that has heaps of pics and a write up. It's a Montero Sport or Challenger for us and he converted to Dana 44's front and rear (coil spring front). Runs 5.38 ratios', 35" MTR's, twin ARB's ra ra ra. I heard it's quite a weapon.
This whole job cost him something like 19K US !!!!!!! But a 4x4 shop did everything as he didn't lift a spanner.

I'm trying to find out more about the Russian one as it looks more of a budget job.
I'll try and dig up some Jap stuff I have a few pics but no idea what's been used. I know a guy in Japan who is planning a Dana 35 SAS.
There was another guy on Trail Talk who converted his Gen 1 2.6 to a leaf sprung front.
What are you planning Grant ???
I'm seriously thinking about a Dana 44 SAS for next year, it's really the only option for a Paj as the diff is on the write side everything else would require major chopping.

Frank,

Dont let that guy use a dana 35, he is wasting his time, it is a really bad move to put an axle that weak into a truck on purpose.

Tell him to save for a d44, or not to waste his time. Im serious, those axles are trash.

Was thinking dana 44 front and rear. Contemplating the conversion but want to do the homework. IFS is manageable but not real interested in spending the money on the front locker if this is on the cards. Just dopped a new (12000km) 3L V6 in, and now have the energy and money to be serious about the convert. Just imagine...Full coil sprung, front and rears, 35's...giving the nissans a touch up... Yep, definately worth it

Grant I think a D-44 rear is a backward step in strength particularly in the diff. A custom set of H/D axles and some rear suspension re-engineering would be cheaper and more effective IMHO.
The front is a different matter I've had guys say don't do this, don't do that. A D-44 makes logical sense as the carrier is on the correct side for the Paj but there will still be a lot of chopping etc involved as they are wider. They are also 5 stud compared to 6 for all the Jap 4x4's. Some say a Bundera high pinion front axle would be a close fit but again a lot of chopping as the carrier would have to be shifted.
I've got a guy putting pen to paper working all this out using a Ford 9" he has done a lot of work on Pajero's and is very familiar with the layout. He said the Mitsu 9" rear diff is in between a D-44 and D-60 for strength. The front 8" diff centre is on a par with a D-44 so he's all for upgrading the strength aspect along with the extra articulation of a live axle. I'm trying to get him to sort out a kit rather than just a one off custom job that way he can supply the parts to others. The prices he was talking (drive away) were surprising, he has done lots of this type of work. Stay tuned..............

Frank, did you guys ever get the jeep Wagoner. It was a really big full size jeep, usually with wood trim, and a little curvey. I think they stopped offering them in early 90's over here.

I wish I could describe it better.

Anyhow, they had the driver side diff like we need, and also were the same 6 lug bolt patern as all the jap axles.

This is what I would do, genII 3.0 axle, with factory locker and 4.88 gears. Upgrade the shafts and your fine. For the front use a d44 or d60 with 4.88 gears, alloy shafts, and ctm ujoints. Lock it up with an arb, and you would have a really really cool rig.
