New Hilux mod tips please...
Hi all, my new '06 Hilux arrives in 2 weeks and am very interested to know what people have done to mod their vehicles.
Could u please give some info or post links to threads covering this?
Particularly like the threads that have detailed instructions and pics (though i suppose they are hard to come by)
Yep, am new to the game but am very interested to learn and do the hands-on approach instead of paying top dollar to the pros and not really knowing what was done. Am a boilermaker by trade so i'm sure that will come in handy.
Thanks all

ARB air lockers front and rear and decent mud tyres will give you 999% better off road abillity.
If your a boilermaker you should be able to easilly fab up bumpers, sill protection (sliders) and a transfer crossmember and bash plate that is stronger with more clearance.

I put OME suspension in mine..
I am not happy with the front end at all and will probably take it out.
For really good suspension for the Hilux using bilstein struts, call ATS4x4 in Geelong , Victoria
Speak to Darren, he will send you up the front end struts assembled, you can then fit them yourself or pay a local shop to do it.
the rear leaves, you can have reset to ATS's specs locally or buy uprated springs if you want to carry bigger loads. and then fit new shocks.
I have OME rears and am happy with them.
the front locker is finally released ! hurrah, same unit as for the 120 Prado
I'll throw a locker in mine, purely to make the diff stronger.
i'm abou tto fit my GME UHF out of my Patrol and the Twine shower. I;ll take pics of the installs
Did you buy the factory bar? it is the ugliest piece of equipment i have ever seen, pus the ARB delux winch bar is cheaper

Pity about your OME front suspension. Would hate to fork out all that money for something that didn't perform to a standard.roly wrote:I put OME suspension in mine..

Yeah cool, post the pics man. Love to see how it's done. Thanks.
Saw the factory bar on another Hilux and thought it looked pretty good. ARB quoted my similar prices to the factory bar and couldn't show me what one looked like. Oh well.
Am also keen on a air locker for the Lux. Do u know what ARB charge for the unit and to fit it?

Yeah i heard the 'lux's are a bit low and a lift kit is needed for 'real' 4x4ing. Is 2" enough? I heard that Tough Dog 4" lift kit is a good option but maybe that's 'over-board'. What u guy's reckon?

Sliders are basicly just really solid side steps that are bolted (or welded) to the chasi to protect the sills and sides of the vehicle when 4wding though rough terrain.Cranker wrote:So what are 'sliders'? Got any picks?

Was talking to the ARB guy and going through all the gear they have for the new shape hilux. He's trying to steer me from getting the factory bullbar (Hilux arrives next week) and get the ARB steel bullbar. Does cost extra but he says it's more rienforced and looks better.
I reckon they both look good.
If i want to fit a winch to the factory bar i have to buy an adapter plate but with the ARB unit it is already setup to bolt a winch right on. With the cost of the factory adapter plate they come out about even in price.
Anyone got anything to say on this subject? What would u do?

I say go with the ARB or you could make your own tube style bar.

But yeah I dont like the look of the factory bar at all.

Hi Sam very happy with it. Handled those corrugated roads well.kingchevy wrote:how is the new hilux treating you dave
Great fuel economy 9lt/100klms highway. That last trip to Cape Yorke.
Found out why the ABS and Parkers wern't working, Opposite Lock Newstead put the 146lt longrange fuel tank in to the Hilux, but i soon found out the fuel tank was touching the drive shaft at full articulation.
So thay O/Lock removed the tank and modified it, i lost about 1lt off the tank. But when thay put the tank back in thay had crushed the wireing harness between the mounts. Got to 180kms north of Cooktown on the Starcke track when started to play up.
I got Motorama to fix it and O/Lock to pay it.
Have you seen many Hiluxes up that way?
Dave.
