80 series part time conversion install......how hard?
Has anyone installed the part time conversion kit from marks adaptors?
How hard is it? Are the instructions good?
Thinking about doing the conversion. Just wondering if I should attempt it myself.
I know nothing about diffs ar gearboxes but do basic repairs myself like brakes, oil changes, uni joints etc.

The fitting instuctions are good can be quite fidely doing it in place, much easier with the t/fer removed and on the bench. You do need a press to remove and refit the bearing thou. Appart from the press it can be done with normal handtools ( no special tools required ) I have fitted heaps as i know this conversion well. Marks part time kit, i designed it some years ago and gave him the drawings as i work closely with him and have shared lots of infomation with him over the years.

I was considering something like this a while back, but I like having the fulltime (non locked 50/50) for on the road in the wet etc and the kit only allows locked 50/50 when you are in 4x4, and of course 2wd rear part time. Using the centre diff lock switch to activate the front diff.
Or am I wrong and yours is different?
I would prefer to have:
1) 2wd,
2) 4wd (split 60/40 or however it is standard)
3) 4x4 (50/50 split centre locked).
Is there a way to have all three?

Burnsy, I have done it not so long ago, you will be very happy with it, as said, you will need a press or probably some workshop can remove and press the bearing for you.
I personally am not going fulltime ever again, have in mind that you will lose the centre diff features, as soon as you engage 4wd, the front and rear are locked together, patrols are like that anyway.
I did the job with the transfer on the car, it was very easy, does take a few hours though.
Fuel economy... I haven´t noticed any difference.

The only way you can have the above is to get a Pajero. I think they do all three.
had 2 mates go up the cape in near identical 80's truck with the main difference being 1 was constant 4wd the other part time. when ever theyt both filled up the part time truck always put in 10% less fuel. thats a big call but they compared it every time cos they couldnt believe it themselves.

Same weight?
Same tyres and tyre pressure?
Same amount of km's?
Same engine settings and tune?
Same exceleration?
Same oil?
I can get 10% better fuel economy by kust taking off a little easier.

One thing I would recomend is to get a new bearing and dont re use the old one. I am really happy with the conversion, however, I barely noticed any fuel saving at all after the conversion but did notice a change in driveability. ( better steering, less traction in the wet etc )

yeah but in the patrol at least you have LSD in the rear... i know the cruiser (80) does also but its useless...

Emo, i too found it hard to believe but there was no reason for them to stretch the truth. this is how close both trucks are. these trucks followed eachother the whole trip...
part time 80: 6in lift, 1 1/2in body, 35in claws, 170l sub tank, 2adults, 2 kids plus all their crap, 260,000km on the clock
other 80: 7in lift, 2in body, 35in mtrs, 150l sub, 2 adults and their gear, 180,000km on the clock.
pretty close if you ask me.
