What's my lift?
What's my lift?
Just fitted 3" lifted suspension - see below for how it looks with 31" ATs on.
Now it went up a lot more than 3 inches, but the old suspension was pretty shagged. Do you reckon this is only 3 inches over stock height, or is it more?
By the way I am not complaining if it is over 3 inches above stock height. My mechanic has quoted me $60 each to cut and modify my panhard rods to make them adjustable, which I think is pretty good.
Flares and 33s should fill the space a bit too I hope.

G'Day Jason,
When i fitted 4" lift to mine it raised it about 5 - 6" because old stock springs were sagged. attatched pic of mine with 4" and 35's.

I always do this with my lift. My old man has a binskins 4" lift and I have a tough dog 4" lift. Mine measures almost exactly 100mm higher than standard and his is actually around 5-6". That does look around the 3" mark.. mm guessing lift size.
We should all be asking bentzook though. Apparently he comissioned the first ever lifted patrol. It is said he invented the patrol.

Re: What's my lift?
Are your panhards you're getting modified the stock ones? If they are I think you're nuts spending any money on modifying them, they're pretty weak. My personal opinion only, but for another couple of hundred bucks you could have yourself some serious panhards that won't break without serious abuse. Like I said personal opinion and if you don't do anything too serious it probably won't matter. Anyway good luck with it.chimpboy wrote:Just fitted 3" lifted suspension - see below for how it looks with 31" ATs on.

Your springs will settle a lot, too by the way, mine looked nuts when I first put the springs in, but it settled right down after a little bit of towing and a couple of trips.

If you have just put them in then give it a thrashing in the bush and they will settle a bit. It will always look silly with 31's though. 33's are a must anyway otherwise you will curse your diffs when off road.

Not so crucial but I have some data as an accurate bench for your vehicle, typical 3" lift would result in a 1988 GQ wagon with 4.2TD centre of hub to natural metal guard to be front 620mm and rear 635mm. these heights are based on 300 lbs front springs and 330 lbs rear springs. The spring rate will ultimatley determine your vehciles staic ride height. Hope this info helps.
Hey Henry what did you think of the ride with such heavy springs in your GQ? I was tossing up rates around the same but chickened and went a bit softer.

Hi Ian, my springs are 2 inch rear progressive springs 240/365lb and the front is 35mm lift constants 250lb.
Compared to the standards these are worlds better I am driving the car now instead of just steering it. The original springs were standards and not real sagged either but they were a bit softer than some of the HD spring packages out there, made the drive horrible above 70km/h.
In Cairns try Coventry auto spares on Scotts damn damn damn good price on king springs, best I found anywhere and I did a lot of research too. $130.00 per pair for the fronts.
This car is more of a heavy tourer/tow truck (wherever the fish may take me), after driving it for a little while so far I could have gone heavier but certainly no softer IMO, it now drives more like a car than it did before, more nimble, reactive to driver input etc.
cheers fnq

fnqcairns, the 300 and 330 lbs/inch rates produced a huge improvement to the overall ride control of the GQ. I went with a 300 lbs front as I removed the sway bars and wanted to maintain a tigher front end feel on and off road. The 330 lbs rear hold the mass of my drawer system (rear still sits up when loaded), I again removed the rear sway bars to get the best out of the longer travel stroke shock that I installed (the sway bars restricted extension by approx 60mm). I have had the suspension on for nearly 18 months and have completed a few beach trips, out to the Birdsville Races 2005 and the average day to day driving on the black stuff.
Not a bad drive for a old Nissan.
