hey everyone,
My old man has got an old j10 jeep with a 360 rambler in it. and he wants to convert it to a 350 chev any one done this or have any ideas can an adaptor bellhousing be bought or have they got to be made.?
any help please

loads of people make almost any adapter to almost any transmission
This is very common swap in CJ based Jeeps but for a Full size Jeep why bother the 360 is a good motor
If it has the 360 in it now WTF would you bother going with Chevy the AMC donk will be much better for torque and can be built for plenty of power if needed
For the trouble I would rebuild the AMC the only archiles heel is oiling and that can be fixed during the rebuild

the 360 is a boat anchor all the parts are expensive. for example an aftermarket alloy timing cover is worth $800 not even rebuilding the motor and i can buy a brand new 350 complete making 320hp for $4500 and a much more basic motor. the 360 was and is a truck motor. at all cost he wants a 350 all i want is advice on an adaptor bellhousing not bout the motor. Each to their own I guess. Where are you shopping to get prices like yes AMC parts are a little more expensive than chev/ford but not by an extreme amount if you shop around

unsure of the gearbox and transfer but the truck was sold as a J10 apparently the were an army reject. can anyone clarify this or just some shit the carsales man come up with. Is there part no. on the gearbox and transfer i've been told the j10 has the same running gear as a cherokee the older ones with the 360 in them. Oh and the J10 originally came out with 6 cyl.

Orginal engines were the 258 I6 and the nissan deisel.
Lots of combos for gear boxes so we need to know that to point you to an adapter.

Engine mount wise the off the shelf ones prob will not work as they will be for a CJ chassis yet you have a cherokee chassis with CJ body I doubt anyone makes Chev engine mounts for a Cherokee as everyone normally uses the AMC although I have seen and heard of Chev's dropped into them but these should be pretty simple to Fab if you have fab skills

Why buy the adaptors?
If I were to change (and I wouldn’t) I would use the whole box and dice from a donor 4X4.
Also if I were I would upgrade to just side grade, thinking diesel, of Big block.
I would find a recon or good S/H motor 360,383 or 401.

Parts for a amc is not bad if you are not in a hurry I am rebuilding a 360 and I have got alot of parts from the US cams valves water pumps,, The price after shipping was cheeper than new chev parts in australia. You just need to spend some time on the net. Also wooders is a big help if you can't find it, he can get it...magic.

i agree with ian i just rebuilt an amc 360 with hi-comp 401 heads b/b chev valves crane came porting etc etc 12 volt dizzy cost about $4000-@300hp.
$4500 for a chev is ok + exhaust +mounts+adaptors+some acc's!!i'd go with a complete driveline swap if you want to do the chev-t-700 4 speed auto would be great!!

as far as rainbow beach is concerned i have been waiting over two months for the final parts to the adaptor kit to fit the 350 to my j10. i bought a350 chev from them and the engine came minus alternator power steering and air compressor. there was no bracketry and i was told the engine was complete fan to fly wjheel. but thats not the kicker, i only have half the kit. I am still waiting to get the chasis side mounts of the kit.
to top it off the only reason i bought the engine from jeep city was because i was in a hurry to get my truck onb ack on the road, and they knew that.
my advise is to to leave it as it is just rebuild. when u do a swap u open up a whole can of worms with small problems. just rebuild the donk in it and get out on the road where the j10 belongs.
