Motor Sounding Sus
Motor Sounding Sus
Hi everybody its a newbie with a Suzuki SJ70 Engine G13BA (Bugger All)
Just got the bug bad 2" OME Lift (Really a 10" plus of the ground) Need a bloody ladder to get to ground level.. BFG Muddies. New leads filter etc etc goes like the clappers here in Geelong Vic (Mexico for those who dont live here)..........Love the site love the posts....... I have a little problem with the zook... There is a distinct Deisel sound coming from the motor under acceleration.. Took it to the brother in law mechanic of 20years says its normal to sound like this took it to another mech (the guy did my OME 2"lift )
Says its ok .... I'm still not convinced as they are not zook owners... Is it a lifter? Did the put a garden hose as a stethscope on the motor and the "sound" was coming from the front top end of the block.. But I'm not a mechanic so who knows. Any ideas??? Oh Happy Australia Day

Location: in the sky , its a bird , its a plane ! No its super MOOSE !!!
Thanks Mouse and others...its been running premium (its much better) I can id pinging in an instant(she pings in 3rd whilst driving like an F1 driver) but no its a diesel sound and only is noticable in acceleration and when backing off the sound almost but disappears, soon as you put pedal to the metal she's back on... Its still goes up embankments like superman and drives very well.
And I am very greatful for your replies... Any other suggestions? Thanks Ron for the input ronoor. And Ron (he's me mate) thanks for cutting the bumper bar and underneath so the BFG Muddies wont rub, done a really good job. I will post pics and progressive what I have done to her soon....
Can any one tell me the best way of putting pics etc on (size of jpegs allowable etc)

cant be push rod as they dont have any.
i rekon it might be the lifters, take the cover off and check the clearance between the lifter arm and the valve.should be .25mm or something...

its a good call mooks100 but replaced it last sat at the bro in laws garage had fun removing the two bolts put it on the hoist and used secret spray and then armstrong 12mm from mem. The old exhaust gasket was stuffed new one seats in very well. I think I will go back to the lifter but christover1 has an interesting diagnosis not sure on that but will keep everone posted again thanks for your interest. I will show what I have done to the zook from start to finish with breif desc. Its not going to be a mad one but it might get their....mooks100 wrote:I reckon it's that lead (the metal), doughnut-shaped exhaust gaskett just south of the mannifold. If thats worn out it can give a throaty diesel sound under acceleration and nothing when cruising.
My 2c
When i brought my car the girl said she used good fuel to stop the noise under the bonnet. I didnt think twice about this *stupid me* and didnt hear it on the test drive.
Then a few days later, heard it.. the ping of death.. The timing was WAY out on my poor zook.
Plus her mechanic who said he was servicing the car (sticker in the car was new when i got it) didnt do any of the service item. Bad spark plugs etc etc.
Fixed everything up.. goes really well now. Glad the engine didnt get killed to much. NO doubt its shortened its life but its not like those engines are too expensive.

I've got one word Kimmy...Piston slap.
mY bro in law mentioned this a:what is piston slap b:how does one identify this? do I do a compression test?
Also when I try to get some one to listen to it , the sound was not as pronounced as from cold take off. I am going to get to the bottom of this. even if I have to rebuild the bloody motor. I like the lifter theory as the hose against the block revealed noise from top front part of motor but I not a mechanic.. Refilled the car with standard unleaded yesterday and boy she pings (no its not the sound I telling you about) and the best I got with a bit of 4wd and around town was 339kms approx which is not great fuel economy but hay its a toy to have a bush bash with....

My idea of piston slap (as distinct from "pissed'n'broke) is when the motor is under a bit of work (ie going uphill) and the pistons move sideways in the bore as the pressure on them increases. A compression test is always worthwhile even for an academic experiment. Good to see if all cylinders are within 10psi (I think it's 10psi) of each other. Don't ask me what the compression should be. Thats for the zook gurus not imposters like myself.
