Just to follow up on my post from a few weeks ago.
I've found out that the radiator cowling is not required for my Rocky. The overheating problems were resolved by...
* Removing the radiator and washing off a fairly solid layer of mud.
* Replacing a faulty radiator cap.
I took it for a torture test on the weekend, hitting a steep mountian range and 200kms of high way driving. Everything worked perfectly.
Thanks for everyone's advice - I'm ready for my holiday.

Shrouding (AKA cowling) not required for my f300

From my experiences the fan shroud wouldn't come into play much above 50km/h. My electric thermo doesn't cut in much on cooler days unless I've got the aircon on or am caught in traffic. So if you're caught in traffic idling for long periods in 30 plus heat is when the shroud could make a difference.
If you've got aircon fitted you're also more likely to need it. It's amazing how much heat comes off the condensor and helps heat the radiator; plus there's a big extra load on the engine from the compressor.
