Warn Hi-mount, quick question.

Post by patrolpaul »

Hello peoples,

Just purchased a second hand Warn hi-mount for $450! I was wondering if someone could advise me of it's age please. I have done a search on here but don't seem to be able to find a table or anything. It is a non painted unit with 5 solenoids. Looks in great condition and works well. I will strip the unit down and give a thorough clean etc before putting on my toy. :D

Go to http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/8274/

It'll tell you everything you need to know, including if yours is an older or newer model. Main diff is older ones like mine use old style Ford starter solenoids ($16 each from an elec wholesaler). Newer omes are specific to the winch.

As for 5 solenoids, WTF? 4 is norm as far as I know.....

I agree about the solinoids. It also has a Warn 5 pin plug on the solinoid cover (me thinks it's been modded :? ) The solinoids arn't like the fords but agsin it could have been upgraded. The motor has different labels to the one on his site too.

I replaced the Warn plug with a small 5 pin Narva plug. Controller end was easy, just had to make some brackets for the female end into the control box. Of course, I only used 3 out of 5 pins. Best to use some heat shrink over the plug & wires for toughness.

As for the solenoids, see if the old style ones will fit onto the mounting bracket, this way you can find them anywhere, and for cheap. At worst, you can knock up a new mounting bracket to accomadate them. Curiously, you're serial number would indicate an older style winch....

To be sure, buy 4 solenoids, and some wire, and re do the control box, as per pirate 4x4 site (as I did), that way you know its all 100%.

As far as I know, most older models were unpainted, like mine & a friends' one. They look BLING all polished up though! As for the motor, I think Warn used ( still do maybe?) generic motors. Maybe e-mail warn USA for your info.

The serial plate above the freespool lever should state the winch capacity, and recommended wire diameter. It should say max 8000 lbs single line pull, using 5/16" dia. wire.......
