knocking motor in an XJ..help..

hey fella's just looking for some idea's for my bro. he has a 95 model XJ which has a horrid knock. he has just replaced the engine with one that had 46,000km's and when it runs, idol's etc it ticks and knocks like it's lacking in oil pressure. the top of the motor is getting oil etc so i was wondering if you had any idea's on what it could, would or might be. thanks rangie dan..

Check the oild for metal shavings (big end bearings rooted),
Compression test it (bend rod or valve),
Stethiscope (sp?) - and work you way aound the engine.

I had a knocking sound every now and then. Discovered it was a worn engine mount, might be worth seeing the rubber has split
