Clink clank like a bad uni but ain't.. now sorted :)

Put a new 2nd hand diff in the rear of me zook.
Its welded and has been assembled with 4:9 ratios from an LJ 50.
This meant using the pinion and housing and crown of the lj, with the centre carrier bit from the sierra. Last one died after 14 months of abuse when 4 year old welded centre gave out.
I'm getting a crook uni joint type sound/vibration, mostly when backing off or coasting round corners, or after reversing. The unis were real bad, so I changed them, very much just in time, but alas, noise still happening.
I didn't do the welding, just fitted the centre in. There is a lot of play in the centre, axle to axle, which worries me.
A slight squeaking, like a brake rattle, maybe from area of pinion.
Its hard for me to locate noises, tho.
Thought I was finished working on it today :(
Any ideas.

I just had the exact same problem in the land rover. turned out to be the pinion nut had come loose. drove ok going forwards under power, but heaps of noise when backing off or coasting.

Well it's all in bits now, nothing obvious yet, but welds seem fine, no evidence of bits in oil. Wheel bearings seem ok, tho I have been tricked by these before. Axle splines seem ok. Pinion has no slop, though haven't pulled it out, no tools for that.
Have fiddled with tail shaft and transfer out put, nothing obvious there.
Last time I couldn't find a noise, I got 12 moths more use before detonation, but it took out other bits as well.

More thinking and looking needed.

I need a new typing finger, this one's getting lazy

I gave up trying to work it out, and fitted an open 4:1 diff, from anthony, ex nam's diff.
Noise has gone away, so I guess we looking at the diff being the noise, or the cause. My guess is a pinion bearing and/or the sleeve thing.
This is the only bit I left untouched, as usually I don't need to, and tools are a bit low on suitability for the pinion nut.
Will hack off the nut and have a look inside, if its the problem, will borrow air and rattler to fit it up proper with a new bearing, and a new nut off the old broke one.

If I keep the 4:1 that means no 4wd till change front :(
and if not, no 4wd till change the rear :(

I feel like a dawk
Noise is solved.
Took diff out again, and rebuilt it.
It did have a few minor issues, but nothing serious.
I fitted it this morning.
Then I backed out of drive and it did it again
In desperation I thought I try the wheel bearings, tho they weren't showing any signs, but upon removal of axle, it became obvious axle splines were very worn.
Put in 2 more axles, all noises gone
Must have been binding up.
Wasn't apparent with the open diff, as less pressure on it, I guess.
