Headlight Wiring Q's?

Post by HotFourOk »

Hey peeps,

When I flick onto high beam with my spotties also on, I lose some of my throw to the sides of the car from my normal lights (H4).
(My spotlights also have a seperate swtch, btw, and i cant turn them on without the high beams on)

I fiddled with this today and found that on high beam with spotties on, one filiment is lit up (the one without the metal shield).. but when my spotties are tuned off(still on high beam), both filaments on the H4 globe light up. :?

Am I true in saying only 1 filament should ever come on - one for low beam(shielded filament), and the other one for high beam?

Thanks, Nick.

On low the normal shielded one lights up as it should...

Will both filaments lighting up make it get too hot? Coz i use my spotties when on high beam anyways.. so its no big drama

sounds like screwy relay wiring. posible someone has put the 87a or 87 back to the low beam wiring.

should be ok - will be drawing more power than it should but. heat may be ok but depends on the reflector and housing. some are metal and some plastic.

cheers

The reflector is plastic because I just upgraded the sealed beam units for clear altezza style lights... meant to be able to withstand 130w globes tho :? should be ok

The difference is amazing by the way

There should only be one filament operating at any time in an H4 globe. Two filaments soon = no filaments due to excess heat.

You lose the sidelighting because the high beams throw more light out in front than to the sides. Also your perception is distorted due to having the extra brightnness of the spotties as well.

In short, what you have observed is correct functioning of headlights and correct wiring of spotties.

Spotties are working properly yes... Headlights are hooked up wrong though...

Missed that bit...

Are the H4 filaments on full brightness or only dimly on? One side or both??

as said previously, you should never have both filaments lit at once. If you do you will find dramaticly reduced globe life and possible the destruction of you plastic lamps as having both filaments lit will cause a dramtic increase in heat generated. you may have installed the spotties wrong and you are getting a backfeed to activate you low beam relay also (as you said with spotties off)
