CV BOOT split!

2 weeks ago I had my left hand CV boot replaced under warranty, as it split on a trip at Christmas. I had to put a bit of a rush on it as I was heading out on a trip with over 70 river crossings…………

Anyway day two of the trip and I have black goo all over the CV Boot again (70 river crossings latter that is) and the CV Boot has a small split in it………..

Now TOYota is going to replace the boot, again, but there is a knocking sound in the front left end, ouch, what’s the likelihood that the CV has gone after 61,000km. Also, my warranty ran out last Monday by the way.

And if you were me, who only knows how to do general maintenance, would you go and get it independently checked by a qualified 4WD mechanic? Toyota will not replace items under warranty unless they have failed, so is there any point.

Just a note on cv boots, years ago with my suby I fixed a samll hole in the boot with a bike tube patch kit. Worked a treat for the 12 months or so before I got rid of it.

If I was in your shoes I would pay a mechanic (shouldnt cost much at all) to just diagnose that the knocking sound is coming from the CV joint that is housed by the torn boot. If this is the case I would think that the joint should be replaced by Toyota also because I would think it a fair argument that the joint is noisy from water ingress and lack of lubrication, due to the failed CV boot that should be good for at least 12 months. On the other hand the knocking might be completely unrelated to the CV. Find the origin of the knocking and go from there I reckon.

Thanks RAY185........ I was sort of thinking that way......... wasnt sure if I should wait and see what Toyota will do or get in and find out whats going on............

I really dont want to be halfway up a track before finding out that the knocking sound was the CV........

and phippsy......... I think I might put a puncher kit in the tool box...... might get me out of trouble one day...........

I might start up a thread on what unusual things people have in there tool box..........

And also, as a preventative measure I regularly spray my boots with silicone spray to protect them from cracking.. It just keeps some of the water away from them and makes them last a bit longer.

But, as yours went so quick you might have hit something which pierced the boot rather than it perishing due to water.
I have seen some people make up metal guards to protect thier CVs from sticks, rocks and debris and they seem to work ok.

Yeah chances are they will be honest and tell you that the CV is the problem and they will replace it for free. But if you go in knowing for sure that it is the CV then you will be better equiped to respond to any misleading info they could potentially try to feed you. I was not always this cynical, but it only takes a couple of dealings with dishonest people to make you a little more cautious.

Try full lock and reverse. If knock gets louder or more consistent, think CV. If it doesn't, try jacking that side up, spinning the wheel and listening. Those things have manual hubs don't they? Any difference between locked and unlocked? If noise is still there unlocked, unlikely to be CV.

Part time 4wd? If so, jack the front of the car up, lock hubs and spin the wheels while turning the steering wheel back and forth. Might become a bit more obvious where the sound is coming from.

CVs are often more of a clicking/clacking noise than a knocking noise.

And yeah, if CV is okay, and Toyota weren't going to do it for you: while the hole is small, pump grease into the hole until it's full. Wipe the outside clean and roughen it up. Repair with a decent bike tube repair kit. I'd probably then let it dry and hold a ciggie lighter near it to help it vulcanise.

But at this stage, do the simple checks for the CV, then take it to Toyota, IMHO.

this is only an assumption
Under MTA rules isn't all work warrantied ie despite the fact that your warranty has expired the repair it's self should come with an appropraite warranty and thus should be remedied along with any subsequent damage cause by the initial poor quality repair(cv)

All right, yep the standard Hilux have manual hubs and I should probably explain the front end noise.............

It is more like a clinking noise that only happens going over rough ground when the hubs are locked. Not a sound when the hubs are free.

when I got home I was trying to replicate the noise, chucked it in 4WD low / high range, Forward / Reverse, yep full lock and everything inbetween - not a sound?

And it wasnt a figment of my imagination, had a friend in the car that heard it and it wasnt a rock caught in the bash plate either (first think I looked for).......... will take it up a corrigated road on saturday with a friend and see what he thinks.

CV/Axle rattling up and down? Circlip left off end of axle inside FWH allowing axle to float and rattle.

CV Boot has a very small knick, not a split..... so I should be happy TOYota are replacing it.........
