202/253 V8 etc into MQ

Post by Ryan »

can it be done?? i have a SWB 4speed MQ with the L28 motor..... now with 2 bent rods each with their own story behind it  and ive been told that i can get a 202 or a 253 put in it fairly cheap.... already sourced both motors but i need to know how much is involved in bolting them up to the 4speed MQ box ??

Cheers
Ryan

Dont know much about the conversions but most conversions are prettystraight forward if you are using a Marks/Dellows or castlemain adapter kit.
But if i were you i would not bother with the 202 as it wont have the down low grunt you need. Although i dont like fords if it was a 6cyl you wanted to fit i would go with an alloy head 4.1 falcon engine. But the 253 will do the job just fine if you dont mind the added rego costs.

Why go a fluffy(253), if your going V8

Go with a 304/308/etc.. get a real one!

The cost and hassles you are going thru, you may as well have some neddies to show for it.

I agree 253's are pretty gutless unless you do some mods. Get a 5.0 lt and be done with it.

Petrol, well sort of, well not at all, LPG.
Go Chev Petrol if you want some fun or the oily stuff if you want to pull.
( you know what I mean).

Why do you think an MQ is a piece of crap?
Any particular reason :?:

hi there,
new to this site and having a look around so i may be to late to reply, have you put a v8 in yet?
my bro has a mq swb with a worked 350 chev in it,gearbox and diffs have held up nicely but the clutches dont last long in it.I think he may need to go a much heavier unit next time.(if possible)
Good fun to drive in the bush, has alittle to much grunt sometimes
eg= going up a steep hill in 2nd low foot flat and the front wheels of the deck heheheheheheheheh (awsome to see) I now have an mq swb with sd33,but i dont think for long, v8 conversions a must
Good luck with it though ;)

Having done 5 conversions of this type I'll give you a few tips....
contact Rod Hadfield at Castlemaine Rodshop, a kit costs $420.00, youll need a holden V8 flywheel too and he will redrill it to the nissan clutch pattern and machine the clutch surface for you for about $90.00 bucks. Use the clutch is from the SD33 diesal motor ( its an inch lager than the petrol one and will cost aroun $210.00).
The gear box IS more than strong enuff ( very similar in design to the holden M21 box)
The radiator is more than good enuff to cool it and only needs the water inlet/outlet pipes to be swapped over to lign up wid the motor..... you WILL have to make a cowl for the fan ( I have one new spare at the moment to suit).
Dont stuff around with the exhaust....get a 2 1/2" system and let it breath, sounds great too !! cost for the last one I did was $350.00.
Rewiring it is a breeze and takes about 3 hours to do, cost is under $50.00.
Air cond bracket is a pain in da butt to make but I have a spare one of them too !!.
Powersteering bracket is a simple thing to make solong as you use the nissan unit.
Sundry items will add on around $100.00 for things like radiator hoses, heater hoses etc.
As for the choice between the 253 and 308.....simple 308 I started with a 253 and now have a 308 ( I blew it up on the w/end ) You will be dissapointed with the power increase of the 253 but will be rapt with the 308.... I'd love to drop in a 350 vortec but the $$$$ aren't there .
extra tip....... when you get the conversion kit... get Hadfield to drill it and the flywheel for Chev Pattern aswell, then your covered for what ever motor you want to run.... cost was $90.00 bucks from memory.
And your cry-baby, whinyassed opinion would be.....?
