02 Rodeo using oil???

02 Rodeo using oil???
Just wondering if the 3.2L V6 in the 02 rodeo had any problems in regards to it using oil?
I have had mine for about 9 months now and done just on 20k with it. The thing that has me stumped is that there are no visual signs of oil leaking anywhere around the motor
I have been through about 1/2 a dipstick in 2.5-3 months

oil
How many kms in 2.5 to 3 months?
What oil?
Is it blowing blue smoke?
Is it being driven hard, carrying a constant heavy load or towing a trailer? or lots of sand driveing?
Try changeing the oil and filter and see how it goes.
All engines will use some oil, some more than others.
Oil consumption can increase if it constanly gets driven hard and an oil change is nearly due.

How many Kms on the engine?
I take it you mean 1/2 way between add and full gets used in 3 months.
That would be close to a litre and probably a little excessive for say 6500kms unless like Guzzi said it does hard work a fair bit.
In comparison my 3.2 used about 500ml between the first 10000km oil change. I havent got to the next 10000 change yet since i've had it.
It's done 235000kms

The car has done 98000km and is due for its service in the next few weeks, it was bought through a dealer an in order to keep my warrenty i have to have it serviced by them every 10000km.
The dealer has said they put shell helix 10w-40 in it. (i thought that may have been a bit light )
The car doesn't get driven that hard really, its never revved out, (4000rpm max) this usually only happens when i want to maintain speed up hills when towing my boat (about 400kgs)
Has no blue smoke either...

That seems very thin to me
Andrew
My owners manual says to use 20W-50 SG or SH
10W-30 is probably ok if your'e in the Tassie mountains all winter

Especially when ya towing the boat. It's not just the weight, its the extra wind resistance, extra rolling resistance of the trailer tyres etc. etc. and 3.2's work hard at low revs (not much low rev torque)fishaholic wrote:Thanks Sudso, they were my thoughts exactly. Could this be causing the oil loss, i.e oil is too thin and burning/evaporating away??
Ill be making mention to the mechanics at the next sevice about it
Andrew
Check your owners manual if you have one for the right viscocity to use.
I cant imagine any difference btween my 98 and your 02, same engine.
If they using the wrong oil I'd be fuming! Have heard too many horror stories of Holden dealer service departments and not many good ones.
Why not ask them to show you in their service manual what viscosity to use.
The only reason I could think for using 15W-30 would be that the later 3.2's have a lot closer tolerances in the engine and require a thinner oil.
I'll look in my workshop manual for an 02 engine and get back to you.

I had a look through my manual and it states 20w-50 I will be having a few words with the dealer next week as i have it booked in for the 100k service.
The dealer is actually a ford dealer which makes it worse Plus the fact im forking out about $700 for the service

yours is a diesel isnt it?Utemad wrote:My mechanic uses 10w-40 in my 4ZE1 even though the book says 20w-50. I asked him about it and he reckons that it is fine. I don't use any oil and have no problems relating to its use in the last 110000kms so it can't be too bad for it.

I suppose they'll tell you "it's fine" to use that oil anyway.fishaholic wrote:I had a look through my manual and it states 20w-50 I will be having a few words with the dealer next week as i have it booked in for the 100k service.

700 Learn to service it yourself, it's not hard, f**k the warranties you pay extra for and then pay through the nose for services just so you dont void the warranty which they usually avoid like the plague, when and if something really goes wrong.
Dealers usually know that if a car they sell will give a bit of trouble they generally wont offer a warranty or be very reluctant to do so if asked, on cars out of factory warranty or over certain mileage.
Why dont you just put the recommended oil in for a while and see if there's any diiference in the consumption doing the same kind of driving.

My 99 3.2 uses about a litre every 5k, no smoke and goes well even though it has done 230k. Using BP visco 5000 which may be a bit thin but I have tried other brands and it still uses the same amount. A motor that uses a little bit of oil is OK as some Isuzu's can use more than this brand new from the factory I have been told.
RA08 4x4 Dual Cab Turbo Diesel Rodeo.
No the 4ZE1 is a 2.6 litre petrol motor. The same motor as in the 88-96 Rodeos (fuel injected).sudso wrote:yours is a diesel isnt it?Utemad wrote:My mechanic uses 10w-40 in my 4ZE1 even though the book says 20w-50. I had a VS Commodore work car and the oil barely registered on the dipstick after 10000kms.
My parents have a 2003 Fairlane 4.0 VCT and I just changed the oil in it (15000km intervals I think). I drained out 2.5 litres and it is meant to have 5.5
While I was in Melbourne this weekend I could smeel that damn engine oil fume through the vents again ( havent noticed it for quite a while)
Only on de-celeration though.
Could this be a stuffed PCV? it felt a bit loose in the grommet on the rocker cover.
