40 Series Detroit Locker for $1500?

My rear diff is about to give up the ghost - rather than the old stock one being fixed, I thought an upgrade would be in order.

$1500 seems like a lot for the rear diff (when the fix of the old one will run me about $500)

Does this seem right and do I have a viable alternative that won't cost me mega bucks?

I've read here that you can fit some other Toyota diffs into the same space, but is this a cheaper/better option or just one of those "look at this buddy - I fit this big thing into this little space - impressed?"

It seems a bit steep to me. For that sort of dough Id be looking at getting an air locker

Who makes the air locker and what would you expect to pay for one? That $1500 was fitted I believe... I'd hope!

ARB makes them for the 40, I would assume that there locker would be about that price, but then you need a air compressor.

contact wreckers/ put up a wanted ad on here. second hand diffs change hands for 100 all the time

what needs "fixing" on your diff?

As far as I was told it, there is a bearing in need of a repacment (this from the Diff guy who offerd a solution for $800 - after I spent $700 on the front that had an effective fix, yet questionable diagnosis)

Simon (on here) offered to put up his diff for parts (since he has plans to make his into a monster) He has a FJ40 (unsure of the year) so I can't even be sure of the compatability.

This is my daily driver so I want the diff to get an effective fix (but not blow the bank on one part)

what years your 40? most will interchange.

i've abused the heck out of second hand complete diffs for years.

if it's that much of a worry, why not put your "good" front diff in the rear for DD duty, and put the cheap second hand one in the front, where it will be used less........

effective does not = $$$$$$

Dude if you only need a new diff centre im sure myself or one of the other guys on here can help you out, or do you really want a locker?
and is it fine spline or course spline??

i'm not really sure when the diff flange changed over, but my guess is a direct swap in would be 80-84 40 series and 60 series up until 1984 after that the driveshaft flange might be different... wouldn't be too hard to change over to your one.

as for theweaker one in the front, if it's just a noisy bearing, i wouldn't worry too much about it being weaker... then again i drove a year and a half on a dodgy pinion bearing in the rear (it still works, the vibrations got to me tho)

I'll have to take a look around for a rear diff to swap out with mine then. Sounds like I should have plenty of options. I just got back from the sand dunes over in Crunulla and it the rear diff made some howling but held up to some abuse.

If my friend is willing to give me his diff - how hard is it to pull it apart?

front or rear from the years i said will go in the same hole and work the same (the fronts are a better buy because they have hardly covered any k's;))

i don't like delving into diff centers... setting up gears isn't my specialty.

pulling the center and putting a different one in is easy tho
