what sort of car mate?
sometimes cars with a gearbox originally designed as a 4sp but produced as a 5sp, or that have an overdrive unit on them, will have another fill plug/drain plug for 5th/overdrive gear, best to drain them all anyway and fill em with whatever came out

yeah i got it sorted . it looks as if it was like that and they have just bunged the higest one but there was only one drain bung on the g/box . so i went with the one i could get off and it worked cause it took nearly 4 lters off oil just in the g/box and bit over two in the t/case and i now have no more g/box t/case noise so it all worked for the better. thanks any way.
thanks jamie

Depending on the gearbox, some have shafts and bearings that are located or tensioned by bolts have the head external on the gearbox, so undoing this could potentially let something drop into the box, and then you are screwed, have to remove and strip box to fix.

Why? In a 2wd gearbox this is the fill point. On a 4wd gearbox the fill point is in the rear extension housing and the one in the front of the case just has the torx bolt fitted. The 4wd box has a slightly larger oil capacity.Gribble wrote: if you undo the one with the torx fitting you will root your gearbox, so dont undo it.
The only things in a Toyota box anything like you describe are detent springs and balls. Even if you undo them the worst case senario is the ball will fall out on the ground. There is not much chance of mistaking these for a fill or drain plug as they are only small.lay80n wrote:Depending on the gearbox, some have shafts and bearings that are located or tensioned by bolts have the head external on the gearbox, so undoing this could potentially let something drop into the box, and then you are screwed, have to remove and strip box to fix.
