Fuel consumption

Post by mattie182 »

Hi,

I have recently bought a 1996 Pajero, 2.8 turbo deisel.

Out of the 92 litre tank, Im only getting about 600km.

It is mainly highway driving, this seems a bit excessive??

Yes, this does seem a bit excessive, unless you treat the throttle as an on/off switch. We'll presume you're not a lead-foot.

Unfortunately, there's not normally a quick and easy universal cure for high consumption. I'm far from being an expert, but I think the places to start are:

Exhaust: clouds of black smoke indicate unburnt fuel is being sent out the exhaust pipe. If you never have black smoke the following probably won't help.
Fuel pump: People often "adjust" the pump to deliver more fuel to achieve more power - check for correct fuel volume, pressure & timing.
Injectors: poor spray pattern stops the fuel burning properly - have your injectors overhauled by somebody with proper experience.
Timing chain: a stretched timing chain will retard your camshaft and pump timing. Replace it!

Now we wait for others to explain what I've got wrong. :D

Good luck,

Scott

Could be a number of things. Like the valves need a look at. If they dont seal properly then the compression needed to ignite the fuel wont be there.Thats how diesels work,on compression. Also the injectors need to be clean and free of carbon deposits on the tips so as to atomise the fuel into a fine mist. Then there is the pump.It has a very high pressure delivery for the injectors to work efficiently. The fuel pump is a pressure timed governed type so even if you bury your right foot on the steepest hill it will only deliver the correct amount of fuel volume as it is proportional to engine rpm as long as it still puts out enough pressure.Lastly, have you got all your filters changed, fuel filters air filter oil filter and engine oil ?. Ooops forgot about your turbo.Check the clamps and hoses form the compressor wheel side/alloy shiny side all the way into the engine you may be losing boost pressure.I would check this firstly then filters/fuel pump/injectors then valves.Hope this helps.

Have you calculated your fuel economy?

I get 11-12l/100km from my NL 2.8. Filling up when the fuel gauge is showing just above empty means I get about 600-650 km from a tank.

I have a 2.5 TD. I get about 8.5 K per litre.

Worked it out the other day, am getting about 11-12 litres per 100km, which is better.

Do you find that, it uses heaps more fuel in 4WD,

hey Mat,

what speed are you doing on the highway, I find as soon as I push mine over 100k she starts to use a bit extra.

with all the weight in mine i average about 12>13L/100k i spose. i don't notice a great difference off road, but where i can i keep it under 2grand and it makes it much more economical (although when i first got it I took a while to do that as i was used to a 4cyl petrol where it HAD to rev).
