doesnt matter if you have 44 boggers on, if the sign says MUST BE CARRIED, and then check yor car out, and you dont have them, you are phukt, they fine you on the spot...
You would be very lucky to find them for 35 anything.
Down here they say CHAINS MUST BE CARRIED........Soooo...... thats what we do buy a cheap arse set though the trading post and put them in the back of the 4x4...mind you they dont fit the jeep.... never have, but the Ranger feels better ( and does'nt know any better ) when he looks in the back and see's them sitting there

I thought the only snow there is what goes up your nose
its cheaper to go to NZ than Aussie ski fields!
Well I'm 2 hours drive from about 6 ski fields and DON"T ski, BUT if anyones coming over for a session look me up I might even be able to put up a couple of bodies

Not in the snow fields... Doesnt matter if you have a 40wd.. Or thats the way it used to be. the old man got done once
according to the perisher website 4wd dont need chains
everytime ive deen down in a 4b they have told us that chains are required just put in in 4wd and take it easy
prolly not a good idea to fire up the air lockers though
"Travel Requirements
The law requires you to carry properly fitting snow chains for your tyres whenever you enter into the Kosciuszko National Park (4WD vehicles excepted). There are many chain hire outlets located in Cooma, Berridale and Jindabyne. Make sure you know how to fit chains properly, always fit to the drive wheels of your car. Take care when fitting chains on the roadside and observe all regular road regulations.
TIP:
When hiring chains, first know the tyre code and dimensions which are found on the outside of your tyres.
Pack a waterproof blanket to lie on.
Practice fitting the chains before leaving home. "

first you actually need a massive fall of snow in NSW to be told to fit them and even then 9 out of ten times they let the 4x4's through.
i have been to mount hotham (vic) for the last two years and they have been a mandatory requirement to carry chains. Last year i had 285/75/16 muddies on, i must have rung about 40 places and no one had chains in that size!! i found a store that modified a set for me but even then they just strapped on and would have ripped of in about 2 mins. I now run 315/75/16 and to get chains i would have to have them made (about 450 bucks!!) so i now go to NSW where it is NOT a requirement in 4x4's to carry chains.
