navara lsd into gq front

Post by eighty8 »

Have just fitted a navara rear lsd into the front of my gq. After reading on a few different forums that it was a possible fit, but not getting any true answers, l was able to find some catalogue listings to say that it was the same centre. l knew that an mq would fit with a bit of machining, but the navara is a straight bolt in.

l was lucky and found one on ebay just as i worked out it was going to fit.

Got the centre friday, fitted it saturday and went for a spin sunday. You can certainly feel the extra drive through the front now, and with the lsd in the rear l'm very with happy with it. l know its not a locker but on a budget and fitted for less than 300, l'm wrapped with result.. :)

Mines an 89 and i'm hoping to do the same change soon too...

Did you get the LSD tightened (by yourself or anyone else) or leave it stock? I'm assuming it stayed stock tension based on the timeframe you mentioned.

Also - what model is the Navara diff?

I did one up in mine B4 the air locker. Was good. Was out of an import terrano for less km's. what you do have to look out for is broken fiction plates in the lsd. Mine had 2 and got hold of a genuine pack at the right price. Rainbow warrior on this forum has it in his patrol now. In all honesty with the claws the LSD and rear locker was fine. I only replaced cause I had the sh*$ts on one hill. Silly really...

navara diiff

Post by eighty8 »

Hi all, from what l worked out, all navara/pathfinder 6cyl use a h233b rear diff. But there's either a 31 or a 33 spline of different shaft diameter. You need the 31 spline which is the same as gq front. See the link below which should give all the info you need to cross reference, shaft size, spline count and air locker part No.
Fitment was straight forward, unbolt crown wheel, swap over and refit.

The unit l got was purchased new from nissan and was only in the vehcle for a short time before it was removed for an air locker, so l just fitted as is. At first l took out the r/h axle just to see if it was going to fit in the splines, once that was ok, l got happy and pulled the rest apart to check the crown wheel fitment. l thought it's no good getting it tensioned up if it's not going to fit, l can get that done later if need be, at least l know it fits.

And its nice and tight.. :D

cheers.

Thanks for the info eighty8, bloody handy tech, great work! Might be a cheap option short term, to an airlocker. I know, I know, save your money and just get an airlocker...... :finger: I will, once the mortgage gets a bit lower!

when i had a front locker Cv's ended up costing me heaps, hence me wanting a front lsd, So put a bit of the air locker money into a lsd and the rest into the house and save on CV changes

OKay, makes sense, thanks for the advice Dave! Have got a mechanic mate, will get him to see if he can find one and tighten it up for me, and of course help me put it in!

P.S. Mortgage needs all the help it can get!

I still can't ee much of a problem with it. nor does anyone who has actually installed an LSD, much to the woe of the "don't install anything but an airlocker crowd".

But more importantly, how it could potentially be any worse in the same offroad 4wd situation?

Less effective at driving through an obstacle than a 100% locking with a wheel in the air yes i can see that possibly happening, but how it could make steering worse (so that you have to disengage front hubs) than any form of 100% autolocker which will have a greater impact on steering is just completely beyond rational sense.

you're basically making the case for an airlocker over an LSD, but making the case for an LSD over a lockright.

Never mentioned an airlocker or one over the other at all ;)

A mate has run a lsd in the front of his GQ for a couple of years now without any problems.
At one stage he tightened it, but got a big scare sidling a wet bank, so put it back to standard and now hydraulically "locks" it, but this set up still allows a small amount of slip, so less broken cv's.

I had a lockright in the front of my GQ for 2 years. Worked great and traction as much better, but it broke 3 CVs on me and then broke itself finally. If you find yourself having to reverse up a hill (possibly from a blocked track), you can't turn it off and bang goes the cvs.
An LSD in this case will slip, saving $

driving around the bush with an autolocker in the front makes the steering stiffer and changes the way the car handles, surely an lsd wont have as much effect.

Sorry, do you mean "hydraulically locks it" with the brakes, or some other way?

Mines an 89 GQ with a 4.2 deisel. Would the Navara LSD have the same ratio as mine? (HG 41 is 4.11?)

Maybe, but you cant use it since the teeth of a rear diff are going to be cut differently to a front diff.

No option but to pull your Ring and Pinion and swap them over.

I break less CV's with lockers than i do with open diffs. Mainly due to the fact that you can drive things rather than blast over/through them with open diffs.

An LSD is certainly a step up from an open diff, however i definitely wouldn't be pulling a locker out of my truck to fit an LSD. Nor would i want to run an LSD for comp work.

But 2 people have just said they just swapped the whole diff centre over :?
