Hello folks,
I have an F75td which is in ahem another vehicle. I put it in and have always noticed that it white smokes ALOT on start up but calms down after a minute or two. Now looking through the workshop manual I see some reference to a 'cold start system' which (I think) alters the injection timing on start up.
What is it?
Where do I get one of these systems if there is such a thing?

White smoke from a Diesel means unburned diesel. Diesel engines rely on compression to generate heat to ignite the fuel (unlike petrol engines). White smoke from a diesel could be caused by:
One or two faulty glow plugs (up to a minute after starting)
One or two cylinders low on compression
One or two faulty injectors
The last two will leed to high fuel consumption, hard to start and low on power. White smoke from a diesel while running is not good news. Most of the time a complete rebuilt plus new/recond set of injectors is needed.
First thing I would try is a new set of glow plugs. If that does not work, not good news my friend.

AWD is a poor excuse for a 4WD.
no - it is all running fine and has been for the last ten years! Its only on start up, the glow plugs are fine and when it is at idle after two minutes of running everything is just fine and dandy.
It is to do with the temperature inside the cylinders because when the engine does work (in the thermodynamic sense) the smoking stops a lot faster......
And I KNOW there is a cold start system on some of these engines. It just is not in my workshop manual.

Another Daihatsu motor into a LR conversion.
The white smoke you speak of, will actually be light blue, when viewed from a distance. It will only be on cold morning startups. Seeing as u are in pommyland, and temps over there are generally a bit cooler than over here, you will get that more often. It usually lasts only a minute or two before the motor has warmed up enough to fully combust fuel.
I would be checking the glow plugs. In original spec, there is a glowplug relay that clicks for about 30 secs, allowing for pre heating. That relay has been the source of concern for quite a few people, wondering what and where this clicking sound is coming from.

I knew it was some kind of relay/switch.. just not what for.. lol
If it only blows the smoke on startup... just let it warm up a bit before you drive it.. wont do any damage to it.

usually on a desiel engine, you have to turn the ign. switch to the on psotion and leave it there until the clicking stops, and then you can go ahead and start it. my dodge cummins turbo has a lgiht that tells me when i can start the engine. and this is for all disels in the u.s. so maybe you should try letting the ign. switch be on the "on" position for 5-10 seconds on warm days and as long as 30 seconds on cold days. should help greatly. also reduces wear/tear on the glow plugs as they dont get clogged from the unburnt deisel.

You're right! I have a manual switching system for the glow plugs and without realising the starting system I had, many years ago, burnt out a set of the standard plugs by using them on 12V when the engine was running. (they should fire up on 12v but as soon as the engine was running be at 7V).
Solution? I have plugged in some other 12V more standard plugs from a Hilux / Land cruiser. Perfect fit and now I can click away with my heater plugs at any time I like!
