2H Engine Rebuild, advice wanted

Post by Shadow »

ok so im gonna get my 2H rebuilt over the coming few months.

What id like is some advice of some guys that have rebuilt thier 2H and then thaught after "I wish i had done blah blah".

The quotes i have recieved vary a huge amount from $2750 right up to $5500.

The $2750 quote is a guy that works from his house but sends the crank cam and head off for machining, and bores the block himself. Im wondering if it is possible to clean the block sufficiently in a backyard environment, im doubting he will have an acid bath available? Anything else i should be worried about with a guy rebuilding from home?

I also plan on putting a turbo on at some point so is there anything i should get done in preparation for this? Are there stronger/better pistons I can get in preparation for the turbo? Could i have the cam adjusted in prep for a turbo?

Dont be afraid to throw some advice that isnt 2H specific at me aswell.

Also, i am gonna get them to replace the clutch while they have the engine out, so is there a particularly good clutch to replace the still factory unit with (410K old Origonal Clutch!(Denso?)). I have heard Daiken make good clutches?

I rebuilt mine about 2-3yrs ago with a mate that is a diesel mechanic, and we done it in the garage. I stripped the whole engine down and then we took the block, head, crank etc etc.... to the place where his work shop gets all their stuff done.... so I knew it'd all be machined and set right.

I also had the Inj pump rebuilt at the same time, although I still think it was a bit of a dodgy job on that one. But not like I could take it back 3 months later when we finally finished building the engine.(lack of $$$) So I'm slowly getting the $$ together to get it looked at AGAIN!!! :bad-words:

But all in all, I think from memory I it was about $3-4k to do the engine(stripping and putting it back together ourselves) and $1500 for an entire inj pump rebuild, that included a new cam cause the old one was F*&%$D.

I'd say if you're gunna get a turbo soon, I think you have to get the pump setup to take it rather than having to get it redone when the turbo is fitted.

And if you're after a clutch, I should have one coming outta my truck in about 8 weeks time thats not even done 1500kms since I put it in in Oct last year. It was the heaviest duty clutch I could get.... a H/D Safari model, and I still have the receipt if needed. PM me if you're interested.

Hope that was of some help to ya!!

Good Luck.

brighty did you do your valve stem seals aswell? Have heard people mention these may need to be replaced but unsure if it is done in a typical rebuild.

Is there anything you wish you had done while you had the engine in bits?

Is there anything i should make sure i get done? like i have been told to definantly replace the oil pump, that sorta thing.

I wasnt planning on rebuilding the inj pump until(if) i get the turbo on there, and no rebuild quotes I have got include a reco injector pump.

My old mans a mechanic, or was 15 years ago, so we could definantly do the strip down and assembly ourselves, but from investigation we would only save about $500 doing this, and im more than happy to pay the $500 for a good warranty.

I will pass on the clutch mate as i might be getting a genuine denso unit for the right price, which, if it lasts as long as the current one did (408thousand k's) id be more than happy spending the extra bob on.

get the injector pump done ....it wears out too
I have a 12HT that was rebuilt by the previous owner (418000Klm) and I am in the process of getting quotes for the pump because it wasn't done with the rebuild and it's running rough

yep i am pretty confident the pump will need to be done but id prefer to get the engine rebuild sorted before i look in to the injector pump. (will probably have injector pump rebuilt at same time, but since almost none of the engine rebuilders rebuild injector pumps in house id rather treat the two as seperate ventures.

So theres no-one else out there with little hints and tricks as to get the most out of a 2H rebuild?

anyone recomend a place around brisbane to rebuild a 2H?
