Has anyone had trouble with there fuel level indicator. I have a '77 Rangie and recently the fuel guage stuck at 3/4 full and is not moving.
I removed the wires at the tank and shorted them together and the guage needle went straight to full so I assume it is the float inside the tank is the problem. I then stuck a yellow tongue down the fuel filler and turned it around. I was hoping the float might have been just stuck and a bit of movement would fix it but no luck.
So does anyone have an easy fix? According to the manual you need a special tool to remove the float switch and I bet a replacement would be expensive.

You do not need a special tool for the early models (don't know about later ones).
The sender fits into the side of the tank (where you see those wires).
With the fuel level below the tank opening for the sender (for obvious reasons):
Match mark the sender unit and the tank so that you can reteun it to the same position when re-installing.
Remove the wires and fuel pickup line from the sender, after noting where they connect.
Bend the tabs back (which crimp over the sender unit to retain it in the tank opening).
Remove the sender unit from the tank. The fuel pickup bends down and the float arm drops down, so you will have to tilt the sender unit while withdrawing it.
I haven't had a problem with the sender sticking in the up position. I have had a leak in the float and worn reostat wiring.
