torque converter lock up

torque converter lock up
I have been looking into ways of de-activating overdrive on my GQ.... with 35" tyres, it would use less fuel if i left it in 4th gear...... apparently, it's just the torque converter being locked up...... I'm told it can be dissabled readily, so i am going to set it up so i can toggle it on or off.... what i am now looking into, is whether or not, you can force torque converter lock up in first gear for hill decents. It would make engine braking more manageable. I am very inexperienced with auto gearboxes, especially the one in the GQ.
Any thoughts??

Thanks mate!! found what i was looking for. Unfortunately, it's out of my price range for now.... but i'll keep it in mind. maybe later in the year. I'll just dissable the lock up for now.... save it labouring so much on the highwayTiny wrote:gday Tony, dont know much about atous, but there is a couple of threads in the bible on this that may or may not help

no....... from what has ben explained to me, and as i said, i know little about them, it only has 4 gears, once you reach a certain speed the torque converter locks up which drops about 600 rpm. it's fairly useless and offers little to no acceleration. If you load it up a bit and it starts to labor it turns off the lock up...... if you put your foot down, it then drops back to 3rd.... then hits 4th, then locks up the converter again at around 90kph

i would personally not unlock the auto for highway driving the auto will heat up real quick then kill the auto real quick
i have spent the money to get all the stuff valve body etc etc
but because i have converted to a v8 the converter doesn't want to lock up all the time and the auto heat light comes on after a while and usually by then the ato is farked so i put a switch in to activate the lock up

so basically, a damn good tune up is about all i can do for fuel consumption..... although, since i changed the plugs, it's a lot better on fuel....... i just gotta drag my ass out under the bonnet and change the points and do the timing.
