AFAIK the registry is nationwide. So you won't ever be able to register the VIN again. Not 100% sure though.

A panelbeater mate of mine repairs a few "repairable writeoffs" - the car now has to have a "special" inspection by DOT before it can be re-registered. Basically the inspection is to check that the vin tags haven't been swapped from the wreck to another car.

Unrepairable write offs are for wrecking purposes only and stay on the "wreck register" to stop car rebirthers from buying them for their vin or chassis number.

check the same way you do in Qld, if its nationwide, it wouldnt matter if you checked them in Oodnadatta would it?

they can still be repaired but they need to be inspected and full reciepts for the work carried out etc. Often evidence of the repairs, ie inspection before painting etc is required.

an unrepairable write off is just that. Only parts but not body or chassis

A repairable write off on the other hand can be repaired but requires a VIV certificate to be reregistered. MOst insurance campanies register alll economic write off's on this register. Once the car is repaired you book into a certified place and they ask for all receipts and chit and Verify the Identification of the Vehicle.

Once writen off it is a wrecker only and cannot be reregister anywhere in the Land of OZ

Hi Mick

I did this the other day on a repairable writeoff in Sydney ... Called the Qld Inspection Services people in Brisvegas (number on the Qld Transport internet site) and they called Sydney to confirm it "had codes against it" to use their terminology. They made the call to their counterparts in NSW and called me back. Give them a try tomorrow.

:bad-words: i spoke to them last night, got a revs off them on it. they said i had to check writeoffs on the internet. A v-check is what you do, anyway, on the v-check site it specifically says that it does not give information about vehicles registered in other states. Im assuming they mean registered as an unrepairable writeoff in another state...... ill try and ring the RTA today i suppose

Stat Write Off

Post by Not For Highway Use »

I bought a car that had been for a swim. It was a Statutory Write Off. it came down from NSW and I tried to register it in VIC. No Good. I bought another Chassis and simply swapped them. My 95 Patrol is now a 89 Mav but registered. I could have re stamped the original chassis but that would have put me at risk (legally). This way the worst I can get done for was a non engineered shell swap. I don't have any compliance plates but Vic roads was only interested in the VIN on the chassis.

I did something similar a few years ago with an 80 Series and had to get a surrogate VIN number because the number on the chassis didn't match the number on the ID plate.

I think you will find there are two classes of write offs

Statutory Write off - Cannont ever be re-registered again suitable for parts only

Repairable Write off - Can be registered again subject to a inspection by a transport body who will removed the cars listing on the register.
