Hilux turbo diesel whistle

Post by muddylux »

Have a 2.8L Hilux fitted with a safari snorkle, k&n filter, safari turbo running 10 psi boost and 2 1/2 in exhaust running no muffler.
This does not make a whistle sound at all, like some turbo diesels do.
What set up do you have and does it whistle?

Isn't the whistle caused from teeth missing from the spline? ?

Mine whistles, though it is hard to hear over the exhaust at the moment, I have a 300ZX turbo on a 1hz- 80 series, boost set at 10 PSI.

I run ct20 turbo, snorkel and 2 1/2 exhaust and mine whistles even at idle. As long as its making boost seems strange to have no whistle are you running a boost controller or anything?

mine starts to whistle about 1700 rpm, thats with standard hilux exhaust. But mates have got theirs turboed and u have to really listen for it to hear it. It could depend on the make of turbo too. Mine is a DTS. Have u got a flexi joint in your exhaust?

turbo whistle

Post by cathgart »

Muddylux, I have a ct20 on my hilux and it wouldn't whistle much so I took the muffler off and replaced it with a hotdog and then dumped it out just behind the cab. Its only 2" pipe but everyone looks as I come up the street now. Got heaps of whistle and the exhaust is still not very loud.
Cheers,
Matt

i was told that the 2.4 turbo setup is crap on a 2.8 cos its too small is this true?? or is it a case of just winding up the boost and fuel to suit??

I have a schwitzer turbo on mine and it whistles but not very loudly. Usually when they whistle loudly they are about to go bye bye. Especially the CT20 turbo`s. So be glad it aint loud i know it might sound cool but it usually meens somethins a miss.

You want to hear it put a blow off valve on.

Yeah i got a DTS on mine and I cant hear it whistling much inside although people outside reckin they can. I looked in the CT20 and even bought one but couldn't bring myself to fit it up with the feedback being 50/50 for and against..

I hate the turbo whistle personally. Once had a job in Dirranbandi driving a 400 odd Hp steiger tractor and i could literally see the big huffer through the glass. After 12 hours at full noise, you cant sleep cause i would lay in bed and hear a whistleiing in my ears. i swear i have industrial deafness cause of it.

Any way, its your pusslux and im sure it hasnt got the same amount of Hp. :D
