But its not as simple as you may think it is
allow a few quiet hours to do this swap .... exactness is paramount

i have a 5 speed sitting under the house that im gunna install one day - i assumed it would just bolt up to my existing tcase (currently mounted to a 4speed).
come on Kingy - don't leave us wondering!?!?!?
what's different between the two? what's involved in converting?

It's no real big deal to convert it at all ........gurumon wrote:come on Kingy - don't leave us wondering!?!?!?
But .....
Its not a simple unbolt it and bolt up the other one as it may seem. It is a task that requires concentration with zero distractions or it will & I repeat WILL not be pretty.
The top gear in the transfer needs to be removed along with the middle ( idler) gear but the bottom gear adjacent to the hi/low selector can stay put.
There are special oiler washers fitted to the two gears that need to be removed and the slightest bit of damage to them will be costly so treat with EXTRA CARE !!! .....
You'll need a new gasket that fits between the box and transfer and it MUST be genuine ...... thickness tollerance here so a self cut one wont work ( trust me !! )
If you have a gander at my members thread, specifically the 5spd conversion, you'll see there's a MQ transfer from a 4 spd fitted an not the transfer from a later MK 5 spd ...... The later transfer has a "dome" cover top plate while the earlier transfer has a flat cover plate.
Again.... this is not a job where you and a couple of mates with a few beers should attempt, buts its a good one for the quiet times with zero distractions.

thanks kingy - will have another read of your members thread.
i went down to have another look at the 5 speed i have and saw it already has a tcase attached
since i seem to have the choice of either - is there any advantage of one over the other? strength? ratios?

None what so ever....gurumon wrote: is there any advantage of one over the other? strength? ratios?
I fitted the MQ one because the MK transfer that came with the box was stuffed.
atleast the box was cheap because of it
