Just a little info needed before I really go hard at looking for the right truck!!! How thirsty is the 4.5 pertol GU? Will it take lpg well?Is the 2.8 diesel not worth looking at with regards to touring/club trips/daily runner? Seems Ive heard its slow and weak.
If I have a good stock 4.2 GQ over a 4.5 GU for tourin/club/daily runner which would be best for running cost, strenght and able to pick up and get off road.
Lots of questions and varied anwsers, but give it to me!!!

Too many questions there to answer at once.


4.2 and 4.5 petrol Patrols are pretty thristy. As for one being cheaper than the other well the difference wouldnt be much - but the 4.5 has a fair bit more power.

2.8 diesels, 3 litre diesel and 3.0 petrols are weaker in the driveline but are susbtantially cheaper to run - approx 1/3 less fuel costs of their bigger bretheren.

There were big problems with the 3 litre diesels early on but Nissan have come to the party on warranty and apparently are replacing the earlier 3 litre diesels when they blow up with a brand new later model engine. I'd want that in writing from my local Nissan dealer before I bought one though.

For towing the 3 litres are not really up to it.

GQ's are stronger than most 4wd's but GU's are a little stronger again, particularly in the front axle.

Either will be able to do what you want. The GU is a fair bit more refined, but it is more expensive to bush bash with as parts are more expensive.

thanks for that!!! I thought the 4.5 wll be thirsty, so lpg might be the right way to go. The other option is to get an older gq and do it up the right way and still come out will $$$ saved.

NISSAN rebuilt mates gq 3.0 litre after coming to the party and blew up 1000 kn later lets see how they go this time. I myself wwouldn't touch anything apart from a 4.2 DIESEL they are a little sluggish for sure but with a turbo upgrade they are great old fashioned reliability and do a gret job at low range 4wding. guy I wheel with sold his 4.5 petrol for $22k (wish I knew perfect donor for 6.5 diesel), he got shit economy on LPG, something like 22/100 offroading

Depends on what it will spend most of its life doing, weekday car, or just a weekend hack.

gotta travel with 100 tankers of fuel in that case!!!! Not what I was hoping to hear. But good to know now. Seems the diesel is then the better option

Depends what you want to do with it, tourer yes you need diesel for the range, daily driver you want petrol as the savings at the pump buying diesel are eaten away by the servicing costs.
Weekdays - Prado GXL D4D with some stuff
Weekends - Mav shorty with lots of stuff

my 4.2 petrol gets about 350 -400km out of a 80 litre tank of gas

I get 25l/100km ONROAD ON PETROL IN A SWB. MANUAL.

How is 22/100 offroad on LPG bad? They only got 20l/100 on petrol ONROAD out of the TB48DE on highway rubber.


That's better than a 4.2 SWB manual will get in town driving, let alone a LWB auto......


50l/100km in heavy going in sand or mud is nothing unusual, and even the diesels can hit the 30l/100km offroad with no great dramas.

Any big 4by will get that sort of fuel economy. Dont expect a Patrol, a Cruiser or a Rover to do any better.

And as for those still trying to claim they get 8-9l/100km on a 4.2 diesel offroad... they're talking out their a$$. If they can get 14l/100km on an easy highway cruise they're doing bloody well. In perfect condition onroad (new factory prepped vehicle) they only averaged 13.1l/100km onroad with HT's and the 2.8's were only slightly better at about 12.9.

Larger muddies will knock the sh1t out of your fuel economy too.

Don't believe some of the fuel economy claims of the diesel crowd online.... they'll tell you they can drive around the country on a tank.

Ive got a 2002 4.8 petrol patrol & only get around 300-340kms out of a tank in town but if you look at a lpg given how cheep that stuff is)tank as well you may get some savings that way.Having said that it is awsome off road compared to other trucks ive had ,so it depends what you are going to use your truck for.
