I would be more worried about the transfercase than the tail-shaft. I can't see just swapping in a new tail-shaft being the only necessary repair.

I bet the rear bearing is shot, AT LEAST!!! Did it run dry?

It was the uni against the diff not the transfer case, but yep I am sure there is going to be more problems to come out of it. I just replaced the diff oil about a week before, there was plenty in there...

Then what *tail shaft* are you talking about??? :? The pinion yoke?

A worn ujoint won't heat up chery hot. Sounds like your diff has gone to shit.

If there is something so screwed up with your truck, most likely the diff, that your turning the pinion yoke of the driveshaft red hot then you should park it and not drive it.

Your going to go from a spun bearing to a ruined rear end.

Or worse you might have the sucker lock up on the highway sending you into a nice little spin.

Its your truck but I would figure out another mode of transportation for the time being if it was me.

O.k new tailshaft in, it was just because the u/joint was stuffed and I didnt notice the shuddering at first and it got bloody hot..... Doug, what were you saying about the transfer case? Because you were right, it drove fine for around 10kms untill I put it into 4x4. The transfer case started to make a real loud whining noise then the whole rig started to vibrate, now its vibrating and making loads of noise even when in 2wd.... So its still off the road for the time been  Im presuming when the u/joint went the vibrations did the transfer case no good, just like you mentioned...
