Funny thing is that it's more reliable than most of the battle rigs and would do OK. I'd get my ass kicked on opening night and it would take the week to get over it. Maybe we do a shame file if I run the 60 ... Shame on anyone be aten by the sub 10K 60.

Just look at how good Todd and Verina Joyce do in their firetruck 40. Todd just needs to stay on his wheels.Britswed wrote:Hobzee wrote:Turtle beats rabbit at Broken Hill. bit disappointing really.
We were originally told it was $300 a car. Great value, 3 mates in 1 car $100 each, 1/3rds in fuel etc. would have been Better value.
At Wandin today they said its $330 per PERSON not car, so looks like the 2 dudes I was going with are out and that probably means Im out too.. Nothing like greed to make value turn to shit.
I would bet my china cherry that they would probably double the # of spectators if it was per car instead.
Oh well, theres always a trip to Robe in Nov

we have a car load considering a run down to support bru21 and heathgu... but handnt investigated $$$ for spectators...... that price sounds a little harsh.......bogged wrote:bit disappointing really.

That sort of money would get me a whitsunday cruise..... but we will see how we go...
perhaps somewonne need to organise a discount if we get a big o/l crew going?
any details on how the spectators side of things runs would be appreciated.

Dont bother with the discount for large #'s. We asked today (they were at wandin) 10% for clubs was it. Although there is a trophy for largest club #'s.Bingham wrote:perhaps somewonne need to organise a discount if we get a big o/l crew going?

The chick was telling us of her "DREAM" for the OBC, having clubs and people from all over aussie making it an annual pilgrimage. I had to bite my tounge!
Email them off the obc site, sharon will email you PDFs on everything you wanna know.
Its $200 more which aint the end of the world, but for some dudes it will be..That will put some off, making it lots more expensive for a few that would have been sharing, since they wont be sharing fuel costs etc. :(
On the subject of spectators, this below from a mate I asked as he goes each year:

If you don’t go with the spectator fleet you can get severely lost. And you may miss a fair bit of action. The best thing really is to get a Hilux or cruiser and just stay at base camp and travel. That way you get escorted. In reality the spectators and media get to see fcuk all because it is so spread out but you try get in what you can. Its more a case of being there rather than being there to catch all the action.
The spectator fleet is split into 3 groups and you can choose which group you convoy with to which area they are going that day. It costs $330 per person from memory, you don’t get a whole lot for your money apart from being escorted around. You still have to look after yourself food and drink wise.
Spectators camp about 500 mtrs from the media and HQ, about 45 mins out of broken hill. Media get treated like royalty, the spectators don’t. In fact each year spectators bitch about it but hope that the next will be better, maybe it will this time. Last year they had a big screen up at spectator camp so you can see the days action of video or still footage.
You need super summer clothes for day and thermals for night.
From memory all but one competition area is within 100ks of the base camp – 200 ks a day is often the travel distance. Sometimes more.

We had a fantastic time as spectators, we weren't expecting any more than we got. The only disappointing thing was not knowing how the teams were going, they promised daily updates but that didn't happen last year. We were told that the spectator fees went mostly towards insurance and towards the land owners (their main roads get awful chewed up after a few cars have been on them for a week) and you get fed at presentation dinner. I reckon it was worth every cent just to be there and interact with the competitors.

I know what you mean, me too! But I think my mate and Jane have hit the nail on the head.....you go for the experience of it all, and interaction with all the other spectators and competitors. Time for me to pull my finger out and get things organised I guess. The more I hear about it the less keen Im gettin

But when you work it out for a trip for a week on ya own, it would be a grand by the time u eat drink and get home.
water, fuel (at $1.45+ ltr), food, grog, accom, souviners, spare $ for breakdowns,
a whitsunday cruise sounds very inviting to me, or a trip to tassie even nicer.

Well I guess if you aren't going to support a team or don't know anyone competing then I can see your point....but is a great experience ...every year I say I'm not going again (been 3 times)...mostly due to the official organisational probs but there are always probs in these areas in any event...if you can get over that it's a great week!! We're back this year!
My mans been competing in it for 5yrs or so always finishing in the top ten so its great to feel & see what it's really like - a amped up week...We're from WA so it costs a LOT more for us to get there...let alone the truck !! But it really is a great atmosphere seeing them going through their paces...with 'safety is paramount' being the motto for the week - not! A sleepless week for competitors...long night transport drives to get to stages, then eat, fix truck & a night stage - then maybe some sleep.....
I reckon we see about 80% of the comp...from memory...haven't experienced the 'new spectator village' yet...The bits we missed were Brumbies run - you just see the start & finish...they just drive all over the place looking for gps points....and the Night Nav stage - but you do get to see some night driving up & outa the creek and then they go find gps points...theres the possibility of a rollover or a few goes to get outa creek...the noise of those trucks roaring through the still of night is something to make your heart skip a beat I LOVE it!!
As for the cost for spectators or competitors it's pretty expensive...especially when you see the prizes...but it's not about that...it's about mateship...driving and naving...the atmosphere.
It is a HELL of a WEEK...hell of a good one catching up with mates and seeing the progress on vehicles from the year before.
As for the Whitsundays, been there a few times and you can lie on a beach or climb a mountain in Tassie any other week...experience it. Nothing compares.............
The Yellow Duck!!!
I think kristy just hit the nail on the head. I Mean it cost 20 bucks to get into the international motor show and if your hearts not in cars then it's a rip off, but if ya gunna luv it then it's cheap. If you want to be a part of the action you've got two choices, Compete=$10,000+ or spectate under $1,000.
If your not into it enough to pay then buy the DVD... 40 bucks!
If you are into it enough then pay and go! I'd be spending me money on a week in the action before a week on the beach.

This is and will continue to be the best event in Australia, with all the tuffest trucks competing for 1st place. The trucks this year will be even better and faster than last year and will continue to improve as years go by. I've competed in 5 out of 7 OBC and reckon watching the competition and being part of it is what its all about. It's cost me mega bucks over the years just being a co-driver but the experience and the friends I've made Australia wide is well worth it. You cannot compare the "being there" to the DVD so if you are half keen on going I reckon you do it. This year they have full week, half week and even day spectator passes to cater for everyone.
This year will be different; watching the action will be the same(maybe better!!) but a good night sleep, cold beer, rum, good food, clean clothes, air conditioning.......These finer things!!! I just cant wait!!!

Howdy Kristy!!
Great to hear you will be back this year!!!
Hopefully we will be there too!! As for the spectators all written above is very accurate if you love it (4wheeling action) you'll have a ball but it is very$$$$ but the socializzing is soooo worth it every year (been 5 so far) it gets better Hey kristy!!
The main camp has no night stages so i found that a bit boring but you do get to sleep (id rather go without and see the night stuff)
Each to your own but as Jason said it is the biggest event in Oz for 4wheelers.

Hello again
the base camp "village" is a bare paddock with not many trees lotsa dust a dunny block and thats it you have the freedom to come and go to Broken Hill, Silverton pub etc but their are no stages at Eldee till the last day so no night stages at all. Each evening the red coats come over and run games give aways and a movie on the semi trailer dunnies. there is only one campfire your not alowed to have your own and the campers were pretty spread out so the walk wasnt one you made too oftan (we parked the fridge by the fire each night!~)
We spent a night at Denian (well worth it) and seen the sand ant night as well we were the only official group to stay at Viewmont for the mud so we got to see the VERY BEST night stage and early morning mud stage which were both excellent viewing. Some spectators did organise trips there too but for most they missed out
Here's hoping we are following the same group!
See ya there

Flying into Melbourne on the Monday before to pick up the race truck, buy a swag and fart around, then heading up to BH on Thursday.
Has anyone bought a spectator pass yet? Can we just do that once we arrive in BH, or do we have to get in early?
