Winch upgrade

Winch upgrade
I have a Warn 8274 older 3 pin model 12v I think is 2.5 hp motor. Works OK but not under intense use. I want to get it working a lot better... should I:
a) upgrade the motor to one off a warn XP (6 hp?) run some strengthening rods, add some seals and air cool it - and upgrade the cables
b) the same but with one of those 7.8hp superduty motors
c) give up and get a maxi PTO
ideas?

more info on these motors?
Any website to give them a look,specs,manufacturers...?
TIA.
click on the product specs link for a .pdf
this is the local agent, don't know the manufacturer

Thanks CT,just asked them the price for both the 12V motors.
Out of curiosity...
I'd opt for some homemade transplant sourcing big bits from scrappers,if I only knew what to look for...
John,truck starters motors?
I got an air reservoir tank off a MB lorry, could get back
and see what else I can find...cheap and quick!
By the way,are you going ahead with your hydraulic conversion?
I'm curious...

That makes sense - look for max torque in a 12v world and a truck starter would be hardto beat. Hmm, theres a truck across the road...Bush65 wrote:There is a place in QLD modifying truck starter motors that some of the winch challenge competitors are using. These produce big power from what I have heard.

Yes. It is on my priority list, just not at the top. Still have to get some machined parts finished. And it will have more power available than truck starter motors.Michele wrote:By the way,are you going ahead with your hydraulic conversion?

One of the features that I like about hydraulics is the control over the motor torque. With electric winch motors you need more power to get higher speed, but if the truck is jambed up the motor slows and the torque/line pull goes up until something gives.
From what I heard, they broke quite a few plasma type ropes during the recent winch challenge at Land Cruiser Park. Some of this is probably down to the rocks and some to the big motors now being used.
Some of these competitors are considering 12mm plasma now. Then we will probably see more broken intermediate shafts in 8274's.

Thanks John,
I look forward to seeing the finished article...
That's why I kept the wire rope so far...
The rope was digging into the ground for the 1st half of the pull...

Tony also broke the rope at the last MWWC,pulling at an acute angle with the rear Husky IIRC...they broke quite a few plasma type ropes during (...)Some of this is probably down to the rocks

there is tons of upgrade info to be had http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showt ... entry37992
I have drawn it together from all over the net.
I snapped the plasma by winching the 90 sideways with the rope against the tyre pulling the front around for a punch
the 8274 has the 6hp XP motor fitted
the rope survived the rest of the day fine it was the abuse that broke it.
