triton engine
Well, after much cearch for a stronger engine i suddenly found one from a Triton. It's the 3.0V6 (6G72???). Does anyone has put this one in a Gen1? Although the max torque is a bit high (4000rpm) i believe it's ok for me because of the less weight of a Gen1. A feedback from some people that might have done this is welcome...

Thanks Hekta, this is exactly my question: is the low end ok? because 24V means more HP but less torque at low rpm's. I believe this is not going to be a problem but i wanted another opinion. Also i don't know what is going to be with gearing. Is Triton's gearing longer than Gen1's?

I have the 24 valve in a Challenger, and although it is not too bad off road that you will find that torque down low is virtually non existant.
I find that I need a compromise on gearing to suit the motor.....you need at least 3000 rpm or more to tackle anything reasonably serious in the hills.
The motor will be fine for you but you might have to play around with your tyres/diff gearing.

Thanks pickle, i don't have any idea what diff ratio Challenger has... If you know this and your weight pls tell me so i'll know what to expect with my Gen1. Anyway 24V engines are generally not so good for off roading...

I don't understand why an engine with low torque at low rpm's as yours (you said that!) is fitted in Triton wich is a rather heavy duty truck that can carry heavy loads - so torque is needed. Maybe the two cars have different ECU mapping and/or different camshaft profiles... Anyone knows something?

I think there are some minor differences in quoted power and torque figures, but not enough to be noticeable to the driver. I think the target market places too much emphasis on power for highway cruising, so that's how the engines are tuned.
My understanding is that 4 valve engines don't produce as much torque at low revs because their effective intake size (valve area) is large in comparison to the volume flowing. At low engine speeds the incoming air charge flows relatively slowly (compared with smaller/single valve) so there isn't as much "swirl" in the combustion chamber. Low "swirl" = uneven air/fuel distribution = poor flame propagation = inefficient combustion = poor torque.

Somewhere in the '80s Toyota sold a Celica with a 4 valve motor which had the ability to block one inlet valve in each cylinder, to overcome this problem.

I know what your thinking here Frank.....as in the power between the two motors I would have to say you do notice the power in the 24 valve compared to the 12 valve. But saying that they are totally different vehicles to drive ,and old one being manual as compared to this one being auto.
I would only put the 3ltr in it Frank if a 3.5 won't go in.

It's obvious (and i knew it...) that 12V is better for my Gen1. But my question still exists because the triton engine that i found is really good and with a good price. How do you think my truck is going to perform off roads with this engine considering that my truck is 1440kgr heavy and the differences in gear boxes?
