MK more flex...
MK more flex...
well iv got a 83 MK, and i woul like to get more flex out of it... can it be down without buying new springs, ect... as atm i have no money.
so can i remove the sway bar, ect... is there any pros or cons about doing this? any other ways to get more flex out of the old girl... im sick of having wheels in the air driving small ruts... (note: my springs are sagged so i only have about 1" up travel...)

Hey mate I dont run swaybars anymore in my MQ, doesn't make a iota of difference. You get very negligable amounts of body roll in a leaf sprung truck anyway.
The other thing I'm planning on doing this weekend is opening up the spring packs. I dont know what the name of it is but the pieces of steel that go up the sides of the pack and wrap around the top of it keeping the springs together. Get an oxy or something and heat and bend the bugger, the springs will seperate and you'll get more flex

This is a pic with the sway bar still in and 7 leaves up front. in this pic i was stopped and not going any where
One with out sway bar and still full leaf pack
This one is with 4 leaves and no swaybar. This pic has a front locker and walked it easy as
Lifting wheels is fun, But a locked front diff makes life a lot more managable. I hope this helps. The rear still has 8 leaves and all has std shackels all rnd

remove the sway bars, you will get just about max travel from your springs without starting the long process of MODS, the front of the MQ/MK suffer from a shitty shock absorber mounting position design, if you know some one HANDY with the tools they can re-position top mounts to accomedate longer shocks.. oh and get them to weld the front top hanger braket on properly cause they all break when tortured...rear is better but still not great with shock mounts...on my old truck I put three inch springs and shock lift kit in and could still get max droop from the shocks without removing the front sway bar because of the limited length...once you repositon the shock mounts the sky is the limit with drop shackles etc. good luck

BEWARE!!
If you're gunna take to the spring packs with an oxy to open up the leaf retainers...
Make sure you don't press down on the one you've just bent to keep the pack steady while someone bents the other end!!
Jebus it stung like a biatch!!!

ditch the sway bar.... it's gunna handle like shiat anyway
can't really think of an easy way to explain what a sway bar is without pictures - look for the useless bit of round steel (about inch thick) that runs across the vehicle - attaches with kinda like a pipe clamp (from memory to the front of each side of the axle).
im sure someone has a better explanation

Re: flex
Yeah yeah, I definatly need to. I cant justify paying almost half of the original purchase price of the patrol just for a steering setup. Im working on it though.matsmad wrote:Do a springover.

i
all the springovers and that are good when money permits. Just get a loan , or do as me and the old man have just done with his, swaybar off, remove a couple of leaves, grease it all up,open up clamps on leaves providing you have shocks long enough to even open the leaves. We just put 2" OME dakars in it which are very cheap for the height, flex, and ride quality he gained..

holy!
How did you guys get soo much flex in your leaf sprung patrols?
My old man's MQ flexes like a dog... well, less than what a dog peeing on a tree would flex!
Had some hairy moments watching him come up hills....
Besides sway bars - what else can i do to get it to flex a little more??
Thanks
Will
