forget the 1.6 on that budget. Buy a low k 2nd hand 1.3 to replace yours, that'll be the cheapest easiest option and you can install yourself easy if you can borrow a crane.

or I have a 1.3 efi, 5 spd coily box, hd clutch etc all complete for sale for 1k ;) but that'd be trickier to install

1.6 will require a bit of work that you're best NOT to tackle if you've never swapped or pulled down a motor b4.

Other major consideration is what mods have you got atm? If rest of the vehicle is fairly stock, then I'd definitely go a fresher 1.3, then do the suspension/tyres/other mods b4 contemplating the expense and work involved in a 1.6 conversion.

BTW, a 1.3 swap is a piece of p!ss. Generally wouldn't consider a rebuild unless you have a half decent workshop and are planning a few internal mods to the motor. Usually just as cheap and MUCH less hassle to do a straight swap.

the thing is...

i dont want to have to do this again, and again...

so instead of doing 1.3 now and 1.6? (or something) later
may aswell do a 1.6 now...

You're looing around 2-2.5 just to buy the 1.6 vitara halfcut. Then you'll need adapters, hoses, wiring and crap + approval.

Can you expand your budget to 3.5k cause that's what the 1.6 will end up costing you. I would be sceptical about doing it yourself if you've never done that kind of thing before.

A rebuild is hard too if you've never done it. Lots of hassle and need to buy tools you probably don't have. Buying a good 2nd hand 1.3 and swapping it in however is really easy. Disconnect everything from old, remove, put new in and reattach.... easy.

Tell us your total possible budget and we can make recommendations :)

I know a guy who lives very close to you that has an engine for sale after being dicked around by someone who lives on a small island in the south.

PM me if you want more info.

Reading some of the posts on this thread, I think some defining is required. It's not mentioned but I think you should recondition as opposed to rebuilding (if that's what you end up doing). The difference is that reconditioning an engine sees a major amount of machining carried out and all parts replaced. Just to start, the bore is rebored, the crank ground which means you replace all pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, belt, tensioner, water pump etc. Rebuilding sees only what is required changed. As the bore in a G13 engine is very soft they go go oval and really need a rebore. I've seen rebuilt G13 engines having to be fully reco'd after only having done 500km's because that's all they were, rebuilt. I can't stress enough, reco and not rebuild for a G13.

As for a low km 1.3, I think you'll struggle to find something as the last 1.3 in Australia was 98 in the coily and that particular engine had a few problems, so really you'd have to step back to a pre 4/96 leaf model and the youngest one of these engines would be nearly 10 years old. I don't know if a Jap import is an option but I'd think that to be same story as what our models are.

I agree on the general consensus on going G16 if you can afford it. It is and will be the best thing you could do. These should have been standard from factory, it makes that much difference. Go the G16B (EFi) option, it's a little bit harder in respect of the wiring but there is over 15kw in difference to the carby 1.6.

You need to shop around a bit more, I bought a 1.6Multi EFI auto with everything, in front cut for $1300.

i personally would not get another 1.3 2nd hand you just don't now what you are getting no matter what the pin head in brisbane says about it having been built for performance etc (i got ripped this way).
id RECONDITION it as i just did to mine $1100 that included rebore .40" pistons , rings pistons installed on rods , regound cam for more mid range block decked full head service , crank ground and polished new bearings , seals gaskets (full gasket kit) , i reused my w/pump as it is still good and the oil pump was in excellant condition so i reused it (over $300 replacement) , etc etc built it on my garage bench , you can get a kit including bearings seals gaskets timing belt w/pump pistons etc etc from suzi sport for i think $550, but you'll need to have the block bored first and crank inspected be fore buying to know what sizes you'll need , and a w-shop manuel (factory) is a little over $100 and you carn't go wrong , and at least you know its done right , and you'll gain knowledge in building it (everyones gotta start somewhere ) .

i was gunna put a 1.6 in mine but the $ was more than i could spend due to being ripped $850 before the build on a dodgey 2nd hand eng , and although the performance will not match a 1.6 it was worth doing for the $ and peice of mind and it goes a lot harder than a stocker now (but also has extractors and 2"exh etc )

so in summory if you have the money weigh up what you want more good engine and suspension , diff bits, or bigger engine and nothing else , or get a REAL cheap 2nd handy so when you do recondition you'll have spares .

good luck
if its worth doing do it intensly , better still do it with MADPASSION

I too am in the same boat, I thought my stock 1.3 was on its way out. Since then its running well (fixed a few things like the timing up) and has happily given me 20,000km in the last six month since purchase.

My decision was

a. Recondition the stock 1.3
b. Get a better carby.
c. replace the clutch while its out.
d. fit a set of extractors
e. replace the stock exhaust with something else.

thats it.. It will cost me less than a 1.6 conversion (which from my estimates and quotes would cost me at least 3000 bucks before engineering)
Insert witty comment here..

You could do the G16A (Carby) conversion but you will only gain an extra 7kw power over the G13 but the torque is the real difference between the 1.3 and 1.6 carby engines. Even if you went down the track of the G16A, the youngest engine will be on the way 12 years as the G16A was replaced by the G16B in 10/94 (SWB Vit) and you'd probably be best to reco it.
