REALLY confused!

Post by DiscoDino »

Guys, I'm sorry to keep ramping, but I have NO idea what to do about the Auto and Manual thing...my LT77s is not the ideal manual trnasmission, and getting a ZF to be reliable seems very farfetched for me and I want the Disco to be an extremely reliable machine.

SO...I'm in need of more power, so I got my hands on a 4 belt 4.2L stock engine, but I need it to be a single serp belt engine for the PSC pump - so what solution should I do there? TD5 is not a good idea for the law as I want the truck to remain registrable...SOLUTION?

ALSO, my LT77s is not the most ideal manual, hence the thought of going with the ZF, but I'm not convinced, despite Ashcroft's help via email and I prefer having a manual for more control...so should I go with an R380? I need to keep the LT230 for the Maxi Drive 4.94L gearing, so LT95 is out of the question...LT85 has an integrated transfer case? Should I just rebuild the LT77s with Ashcroft's oiled mainshaft?

Transfer case - well, we're lucky that the LT230 is robust and MD has the 4.94 for it...

So, my "current" set-up (the most affordable and readily available) is:

4.2 4 belt + LT77s enhanced + LT230 w 4.94L

Is that a crappy set-up? I prefer going to the hassle of reworking the pulley for the PSC pump instead of running around town for a serp 4.2 and enhance the LT77s and be able to "limp" home if shit hits the fan rather than get towed...

What's your call - again, sorry to beat a dead horse!

LT85 uses the lt230, you wont get an lt77 to handle any sort of power and be reliable as well. If you want a bullet proof auto then use a torqueflite from a early 80's rangie, they are only 3 spd but hell you wont be doing much highway km's anyway. If you get the right parts you can convert the 4 belt motor to single serp belt.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

As Loanrangie said, the LT85 uses the LT230. You can still buy LT230's new from Santana in spain - they are used in the Santana PS10. Dave Ashcroft claims the latest suffix R380s are as strong as the LT85.

I don't see why a ZF wouldn't be strong enough if you look after it.

DiscoDino,

Another option is to use a nissan patrol 5 speed. Good first gear ratio, strong, and cheap. Les Richmond Automotive does a kit to put it between a rover v8 and LT230.

Where to get the 1st low mod?

FYI - I've located a 4.2 ZF, so I'm keeping it stock except for the huge cooler and temp gauge
