Winch Rope for high mount
Guy's, I know this has been done many times but after doing a search I am more confused now than when I knew nothing at the start of searching ( I think that makes sense ). I have a 8000lb high mount that I am about to fit to my GQ wagon. A couple of simple questions;
1) What diameter is required for comp work or prefered by users?
2) How much plasma/dynamica etc rope can I fit on the drum at that diameter?
3) What is the Brands that people are using?
4) Best place to get it from?
I have checked out rockstomper.com but want opionions from people that actually use it here in oz. Thanks heaps for your replies.

we have it on www.my4x4.com.au
Dyneema is better as it is rated at the SPLICE not the actual strenght of the rope. Plasme can often look stronger but if it was measured at the splice it is far less

Dyneema ropes sold by www.my4x4.com.au are an excelent product, but they are NOT rated at the splice (at least by the manufacturer) and at the www.my4x4.com.au site i can't find any rate strengths for the ropes. Acording to the manufacturer of the rope in Denmark: "The above breaking strengths are the breaking strengths of ropes. Splices will decrease the breaking strengths by app. 10%. All the tecnical characteristics are strictly indicative."
Dia (mm) - (Minimum breaking load in tonnes)
08mm - 7,3tons
10mm - 10,9tons
12mm - 17,8tons

I use 11mm Amsteel Blue on a comp GQ and wouldn't go any smaller, but use 10mm for a club GQ as its easy to throw a pully block on if you're really stuck.
Have found the Amsteel Blue (Dyneema) to be a great product, but the waxy coating on it when new tends to make it stick to the wraps of rope below it on the drum, especially when cold. Its best when its been used a few times and starts to fluff up a little.
Dyneema will take a higher number of repeated maximum loadings before failure, than compared to say Plasma.

the rope is sold here based on the splice which as pointed out is lower than the actual strenght of the rope itself.BJ40 3B wrote:Dyneema ropes sold by www.my4x4.com.au are an excelent product, but they are NOT rated at the splice (at least by the manufacturer) and at the www.my4x4.com.au site i can't find any rate strengths for the ropes. I hadnt noticed that the rated strenght hasnt propagated onto the web properly, looks like we need to do some more work to get it displaying properly...thanks for pointing it out

Thanks for your assistance. Sorry to those on here who have a Australian business selling this type of product but I ended up getting 11mm x 45m Amsteel Blue from America for $429 delivered to my front door . No-one on the web in Australia that I found, could even come close . I do prefer to support Australian businesses but when you add up what it cost's to give our toy's the setup we want every cent counts. For the dollars saved I can pay for a ARB compressor ready for me to purchase difflocks when dollors permit. Just got to wait for the rope to arrive. They have said within 1 week. Thanks again.

Agreed, the importers of Dynamica need a reality checkpatrolpaul wrote:Thanks for your assistance. Comes complete but you can sell the rope and fairlead on eBay for $100 each and you've just paid for half your rope.ausyota wrote:I have a question.
Can a warn winch, say a 9.5XP, be had new minus the wire cable and roller fairlead? Or would I have to buy the complete setup then try and sell those bits privatly?
Paul.

Ive been looking at these aswell and as far as i can tell they sell 5/16 at 150 ft = 8 mm at 45 m or 3/8 at 125 ft= 10 mm at 38 m . Just wondering , have you ordered a special length and will 45 m of 11mm fit on a standard high mount drum ? . thanks shane...........patrolpaul wrote:Thanks for your assistance. I made a slight mistake (read typo), it is actually 10mm. Yes it will fit (so I have been told). Will let you know when I have it fitted to the winch.

Is a 10mm Dynamica rope enough for my BJ40? The winch is a Warn Highmount, and the 40 weights 1400/1500kg. the rope is rated at +/- 10ton breaking strength.
How does Dynamica rope compares with Plasma, Amsteel Blue, Masterpull and all the others? Is it better, worse, or the same thing with another name? What are the opinions of all of you?
Thanks!

Photo's as requested. I ended up putting 40m of 10mm on the reel. 45m was just to much (in my opinion anyway). It took 5 working days to get here from America. Now to find somewhere to use it

Yup, here's what I do -big bundy wrote:how do u do this? winch your car in on flat ground?blkmav wrote:Make sure you stretch it as you would a steel cable before first use
get another mate
find a dirt area with a big arse tree
wind the rope out until five wraps on the drum
hook up rope to big arse tree
winch in
mate feeds rope neatly on drum
you sit in truck with handbrake on and foot on brake for resistance
The first time you do this the rope will shrink about 1/4 it's size. If you don't do this, the rope will cut into the layers and you'll need to buy a new rope.

By the pictures it seems like tubular webbing used for climbing/caving anchor points. it's available in various widths like 1 inch, 1/2 inch.... You can get it on every sports store where you can get climbing/caving equipment, or on ebay. Watch this link
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dl ... =&saprchi=
There are lots of it for sale in numerous sizes and colours.
Allmost all climbing material is ready to send to the trash bin after 5 years, even if its unused. So, if you find a shop who has old webbing in stock, you can get it at a really low price!
Now, my question.
Is a 10mm Dynamica rope enough for my BJ40? The winch is a Warn Highmount, and the 40 weights 1400/1500kg. the rope is rated at +/- 10ton breaking strength.
