looks like the aircon unit as given up the ghost. have been hearing a very slight whining noise from the engine bay but couldnt source it til now. found bits of dried melted plastic all over the belts and front of the block and now with the aircon off the clutch spins very spasmodically and no cold air when switched on.
any prospect for repairs or is it time 4 a newy, whats the approx damage?

Hey guzzla i have an 80 had the same thing happen 3 weeks ago.
The front bearing on the aircon pully seized,not uncommon,
Unfortunately what happens it will flog out the alloy housing it sits on.
and you could be up for a reco,or 2nd hand compressor or new one.
Plus regassing fitting ect.not cheap.
You could have a go your self depending on your skill level.Iam a mechanical fitter and will try anything once when big bucks are involved.
I was a bit lucky and was able to remove the pully from the compressor in the the vehicle , and not have to lose the gas .had to remove steering damper and sump guard. to get at from the bottom.
It is not easy you will need bent circlip pliers and a mechanics mirror, ect and a shit load of patience. but it saved me $800 to $1000.
i was lucky the housising the bearing sits on was only worn a little and fitted a new bearing $23,using loctite quick metal. So far working well .

thanks robst, how unusual for the repair not to have 3 zeros on the end of any repair bill for a tojo.
i assume id cause no probs if i cut the belt off to isolate the unit to prevent further damage til i repair it this weekend.

Hey guzzla, Before jumping in too deep make sure it is your compressor at fault.
You may just have a seized idler pulley or something silly like that.
Whip the belt off (make it sound like a simple job don't i?) and try and turn the compressor by hand. The section where the belt runs should be very easy to turn. The very front part (Clutch assy) should also turn quite easily by hand but have some firmness. Turning the clutch will feel a little "notchy" because you are turning the compressor. Also give the other pulleys a spin with the belt off.

Definately remove the belt no problem ,it's not hard to get at the tension pully it is allso a good idear to change the bearing in that as well about $12.
Once the belt is of you can check the compressor pully for end play and up and down movement .And as you describe the melted plastic,
that sounds like the plastic cover on the electro magnet behind the pully clutch arrangement,getting chewed up.
i dont now what year yous is but may 95 the old gas was disscontinued so if you are older than that it will cost more for the new gas update parts filter ect ect not to sure on all the bits.

too busy getting a start on the new rear wheel carrier to stuff around backing it off so i took a short cut with a stanley knife, good move as the belt had cracking on the underside. more than expected play in the pulley when twisted side to side but up n down seems ok though generally it appears rather loose.
will try the circlip pliers trick be4 just buying a new one. although it may be illegal is there any hazard in just dumping the aircon gas, its a 96' mod ?

Hey I just had mine give out last week took it to Toyota and got hit in the head with a big fat TUNA 
. The total cost was $1200 of my hard earn cash. and get this, made them itemised the bill they charged me wait for it

I had one sitting in the console they could have used.
Only thing I have to show for it nice COLD air and a peace of mine that it works. Oh yeah I live UP north so I cant live without it

got in the truck this arvo after sitting in the hot sun all day and went for the aircon switch only to realise it "no love me long time" . so im thinking that suxs yhw now only to remember im leaving for a trip round oz soon so its definately a good thing its gone now and not in some arid wasteland.

Mine went on me a few weeks ago. Sounds like you have the same problem. My clutch bearing went and chewed out the housing, but the compressor was fine. Just disconected the drive belt till I got a new one. Found a second hand one on ebay. Pulled the clutch off the old one and bolted the new one on. No gas release or anything to do with the gas.Took me all of 40min and thats without ever doing one before, so try that option first before taking it to a workshop.
