Gas

Post by LuxyBoy »

I have the TorqueGas setup $2000
Still collecting data at the moment but i am very happy with the power increase; 4th gear and accellerating up hills i used to do 2nd full stick to 3rd and back to second because the revs drop too low and so forth.
I am currently only running the runin jet but get the bigger one put on Friday, should be great. This is done to let the motor clear out the carbon, no smoke anymore. i will be posting up all of my data concerning this after i have run a couple of tanks with the bigger jet installed.
Kind Regards,
Brad

Full kit all parts fully installed and dynoed; includes first service at one month which includes a bigger jet and a re-dyno. First month your engine just cleans itself.

ok i have a turbo intercooled gu coil cab. The guys at wandin said you get the same % increase what ever setup you have. They do the first month check ect, but the one at $2000 sounds heaps cheaper, maybe worth a go.

I was told that you get about the same amount of power as turboing and if you have them together the turbo complements the gas and is even better.

I rang around and spoke to everyone including the RACQ about this a few months back and apparently it works a lot better on a turbo'ed vehicle as the extra air forced in really helps the burn.

If you have an intercooler u have to make sure they inject the LPG after the intercooler otherwise u have a nice LPG filled intercooler when you switch ya motor off." KABOOM" If you dont have an intercooler some places recommended fitting it before the turbo so it would mix better, but they were split 50/50 on this..

I am still looking at doing this but have to come to terms with parting with that sort of $$$ up front. Might wait until I get Luxyboys new fuel econeomy figures..

There was a story in a recent 4WD Monthly, fitting LPG to a troopy with aftermarket turbo. From memory, total cost per km (diesel and LPG consumption) was lower than before, but not by a significant amount.

If you can't justify the expense solely on performance benefits alone you might need to factor in extended service intervals (from cleaner running) before payback looks reasonable.

It will be interesting to see if NA is a significantly different story (expense wise.)

Cheers,

Scott

there was a bloke in capalaba doin them a while ago i think

mite be TRUCKGAS ?? unsure

remember they were putting the LPG in before the turbo to keep it cooler and get more boost outta them .
increases the diesel burn rate to about 90% with LPG from memory
just a little left of insanity :)

just off the phone from both torquegas and dieselgas from bris ,t/gas $2250
d/gas $3850 ??? whats the go, is there such a difference in systems that one can charge $1600 extra ,they both have to conform to aus standards etc ,very keen on t/gas ,certainly at that price its worth having done ,luxyboy -am looking forward to the results, will give d/gas a ring to ask how they justify the extra $1600 bucks

There's been a bit of discussion on this on the 4WD monthly site ...

I'm still not completely convinced... the numbers in the 4WD monthly article don't really stack up financially (ignoring the power increase)
If it's already been thought of...

Maybe the difference is for tank sizes? how many tanks? location under the vehicle? different size converter? could be a range of items to change the cost i reckon. maybe you need to be more specific about the install and whats included.

the 1600 extra is prob what d/gas put as a mark up they are more than likely buying the whole kit of torquegas and just fitting torquegas distribute to most if not all other gas install shops

They import there kit from overseas and they reckon their computer box that controls it is where the price increase is, that and higher labour charge i reckon.

I gather from what your saying that the t/gas must be a manual system because they are going to change the jet after the first service. The d/gas i know is a computer controlled system that adjusts gas flow based on reves and speed, also shuts off the gas when idleing and braking. I would say $1600 increase for a computer, wiring harness and fitting isnt that bad. But $1600 is alot of diesel and gas.

Mine shuts off when braking, actually as soon as your foot is of the pedal. It also adjusts with revs but doesn't have the computer to break during water crossings; several of the guys there have them and run them through water and on the beach in the salt with no dramas. They replaced my whole unit while i was there on Friday because some of the pressure switches were failing so they change to better heavier duty ones. Very imprest with power and fule so far with the bigger jet, Going for a long drive tomorrow to try get the fuel economy stats quicker then day to day driving. I am trying to keep some sort of standard with them be changing gears at 2500rpm throughout the range. Already looks promising from the half tank left.

i cant afford the time to run back and forth for adjustments etc ,what i am looking for is reliability and long service ,perhaps i should leave this new stuff alone and just try a 2.5 inch exhust with extractors - nah stuff it , they must have worked out somethng to make diesels more efficient then they are

Since fitting this setup has your temp increased or has it remained the same?

In theory the EGT should be lower as the diesel is burnt in the combustion chamber rather than in the exhaust, and I take it the LPG is cool itself although i doubt that would have much effect.

I am looking at doing this but cant seem to come to terms parting with $2000 yet. With luxyboys setup there doesn't seem to be a lot to it so i dont see where the money is spent...

Post by LuxyBoy »

Temp dropped a little, not that much. The nice new EGT told me so :D

The money is in the fact that the gas fitter is laying his lively hood on the line on every install. If the install fails due to neglegence or dodgyness he is liable. This include his apprentices working under his licence. If someone dies he is liable for man slauhter
Parts are from America so i don't know the cost there but just to fit my other tank to be used for onboard air they wanted $60 for the retaining straps.

Luxyboy,

You have my total and undivided attention.

Been following your posts and am VERY intrigued, keep us updated if you can would you ?

I've obtained a phone number which is supposed to be the recommended installer of these devices in my state, intend to give him a ring in a few days.

Now had my Gu for just over a month, going in for warranty work tomorrow, then gotta get the injectors seen too, (blowin to much smoke, like some posters on here, Heh ) the bloody tappets also make a hell of a racket, so I'll hafta get them done shortly as well.
Timing belt gets done Friday, then after ALL that big spend up, I'll give her a run to see if things have improved.
If not, the gas addition sounds a very attractive alternative, jusy hope I can lay my hands on it over here, should the need arise.

itchyvet,

Check out http://www.perth4x4.net/forum they have been talking about lpg fumigation as well in a number of threads and have listed some WA installers in some of their posts.

Thanks for the reply.

How much improvement have you seen in fuel consumption since the install?

Have you had it on a dyno to see what the power increase was?

Sorry for all the Qs but I want to see that it is worth the $$$ before parting with them
