GQ drivetrain noise?

Post by fnqcairns »

Got the opportunity to do some rockhopping over some river rocks today and the noise from somewhere in the drivetrain came again to my attention.

It makes this Grrr Grr sound when idleing (up to 1100rpm) along in 2wd or 4wd and anywhere over rocks it really gets noisy as the weight too and fro's along the drivetrain.

Does anyone know what this is? The drive train is really tight in this car as it has done next to no 4wding-was a mums taxi.

thanks

Cheers fnq

Mathew this car's underside has never seen the ground not even a touch! something that is bound to change :)
The noise is from around the general area of the front half of the gearbox.

Ozi1 it's a 4.2 diesel, yes it could be called a vibration but nothing is rattling to cause it except the engine. Yes same sound as in car parks but is VERY much louder slow over rocks.

Ian nice to know someone else who has it also(you know what I mean ;) ) Does yours get bloody loud at times? or stays at car park levels even off road?

Would love to know the mechanism.

cheers fnq

Is that the noise that sounds like a heavy vibration when labouring a bit, I spent the weekend under my GU trying to find that. I thought it might have been the tab things on the engine mounts vibrating together when the motor is labouring and vibrating a bit.

I did find the gearbox and transfer breathers hanging off, a loose exhaust mount and an ants nest on the ground though.

Ok I will stop worrying, what's good enough for a GU is good enough for my 10year old GQ.

Still I would luv to know what the mechanism on which part actually makes the sound :?

thanks for the replys,

cheers fnq
