Umm, not exactly . I went to Mannell and a mate went to Overkill as part of a metal/engineering course a couple of years ago. They even ended up paying me a little at the end  .
They had me making engine and gearbox mounts for a 4Runner/Ecotec V6 conversion, and bearing/oil changes/general service stuff.
The guy at Overkill was welding up intercooler pipes and making brackets for a turbo XR8.

*The apprentice at the time did seem to do little other work than cleaning, handing the guys tools and removing wheels before the cars were worked on.*

Its always a good thing. I wish I had more mechanical knowledge

Pretty sure Panorama Tafe still do cheap Fab. courses.
Night or day, from competency certificates to trade to inspector etc.
There used to be a small training centre on O'sullivans Beach Rd at Lonsdale too who had free fabrication classes for students/unemployed.
Cant remember the name or if they still exist though.

Or cheaper still, watch that Backyard Blitz show for some tips

That's just terrible exploitation. He should have been doing a full rebuild on your rig, unsupervised :D
