Air filters
Air filters
Howdy all,
I Know this is going to sound strange but here goes!
Ive got 4.2 diesel GQ 1990 model and was looking into doing a service on it as you do!
And notice one thing strange ive only got one filter ontop off the engine, sure there a pipe leading down to a second air pod which mounts directly to the side guard, but there no air filter in it. Its one complete unit.
Im confussed because all the filter kits ive seen have two filters in them?
Can anyone helpme?
Thanks
Ben.

Thats the precleaner. Not required, remove the box and all, and breathes better.sure there a pipe leading down to a second air pod which mounts directly to the side guard, but there no air filter in it. Its one complete unit.

If its not required, why is it there in the first place?
Picko
If you are looking to keep it standard then place a filter in there. The oval filter will hardly get dirty if the pre claner is fitted. Nissan designed it this way to remove most of the dust before it gets to the main filter. Most 4WD,s had a similar system up until recently.
Any engine hates dust, espcially deisels & if you happen to be driving on a lot of dusty roads then you need all the protection you can get.
On a standard engine you really wont notice any real difference in power but your engine will last longer.
Thats why they do the kilometer,s they do

why do 4wds not come with snorkels from the factory?mkpatrol wrote:bogged wrote: Thats the precleaner. Not required, remove the box and all, and breathes better.

Check the outlet size on the precleaner box, its 1/4 the size of the inlet.

Because a snokel is not integral part of the operation of the vehiclebogged wrote:why do 4wds not come with snorkels from the factory?mkpatrol wrote:bogged wrote: Thats the precleaner. Not required, remove the box and all, and breathes better.

Until it is re-honed in a vertical direction by all the dust.

Ben I was confused too, I have only had mine 3 months and everything I read related to a different precleaner with an element. If you pull it out there is certainly no element to service only a rubber flap toward the bottom front middle that needs to be squeezed every now and then.
Mine had not been done for who know how long and necessitated pulling the whole unit as the dust, sticks bugs etc had formed a thick blockage up into the unit that wouldn't clear. So I suspect they do actually work at saving money on element replacements.
cheers fnq
