gear oil for powertrax lockright ???

Post by christover1 »

I'm in the process of searching the net and OL for this, but here may be faster.
Does it matter what gear oil I use for the lockright diff?
Have been using 90/140 for the diffs, but now they are all new, it may be unnessary, or even wrong. Only has 90 in diffs at the moment, to flush them a bit, before I add good oil.
I use normal 90 gear oil for the box and t-case.

Can I or should I use LSD oil for all or some?
Can I or should I use 90/140 for all or some?

thanks all.

I found Richmond gears, the lockrights home page, it says in many places "no special oils required."
So I guess the question is "Is there any advantage/disadvantage for LSD oil, or heavy weight oil in diffs, gearboxes and trans cases?"

My fear is heavy oil may interfere with the lockrites unlocking, and be a problem for synchros in the G box.

I'm leaning toward heavy oil in t case and rear diff, with normal oil in G box and front lockrited diff.

i use cat 85w-140 in transfercase gear box and front and rear diffs , in winter the gear selection is a bit notchey till it warms up a bit , but as for my e-z locker rear no dramas unlocks -locks no problem hot or cold , (reason for me using this oil is cause we don't use any thinner oil for diffs at work so this is just cheaper for me = free ) i stripped my transfer case down over christmas after a couple of years use on the series 1's and they all look as good as new , also pulled out my diff and inspected it and again good as the day i put it in .

Motul make a specific oil to do that job which i run. Plus I use their products for my motorbikes and cars and have never had any issues with it. The only downside is it can be expensive.

I've had a lockrite for nearly nine years, used std whatever's on special, gear oil and it still works as good as it did when new.
Can't say the same for my Richmond gears, they started stripping teeth front and rear. Zuki gears are much better.

I bought my Lockright from Trail Tough and asked them what they would reccomend. Thier answer was just a good LSD oil which is what I did. Not been in long now but smooth and quiet. :D

I'm a little confused.
I thought Richmond gears were the makers of the lockrites.
I know LOKKA is a different maker of similar product.

thats probably what I'll do, lsd oil in the diffs, and normal penrite 80/90 in box and maybe 90/140 in t-case.

But have decided to keep running the penrite 80/90 in both diffs and tranny and box, till after Adventure Tour, as I will need to change it then anyway..

thanks all

I decided on penrite 80/90 for the gbox and trans. This viscosity is recommended by Suzuki and most oil manufacture sites.
Heavy oil would make gbox sluggish, I believe.
LSD oil of many manufacturers were very clearly marked as not suitable for g boxes and trans. Mainly synchro ring probs.

I am putting in Penrite 85/140 LSD oil in the diffs, as it has a slippery additive, to stop clutch shudder in an LSD, and this sounds to be a good idea for smoothness of locker. My diffs don't stay cold very long, so oil should still be thin most of the time.
Rear diff only gets it, because bottle size has enough left, so no need to buy a seperate 140 oil.

Penrite has a good reputation, a good bottle size (2.5l) and a good price, around $20 for LSD and normal.

Time will tell if its a good idea or not :)

I use 80w140 because I have such a tall ratio. With the small pinion on a 5.38 gearset spinning so fast I thing that 75w90 would probably foam up. I use no additives.
