I'm in the midst of putting some idea's together for a buggie and I was thinking about a mk transfer case behind a old hi/lo trans box via a short shaft to the engine and box.
I know the litte boxer motors are great and nearly bullet proof .
So is there any reason this would not work.

Rear output on Subie gearboxes are not strong, they are designed with a definite front wheel bias.
Subie motors are a bit different, having the "bellhousing" facing about halfway down the length of the torque converter/about flush with the top of the pressure plate of the clutch. Finding a matching gearbox from another vehicle wold require fabbing a new bellhousing mount to fit the Subie bellhousing.
Having said that........... an east-west EA82 (ohc) or the flat 6 from an SVX driving an old 4 speed 2wd gearbox from an EA80 (ohv) with a welded diff (3.9:1 diff) to two normal rigid axle diffs............
Could also be possible to "amputate" the rear axle drive and shorten the case of a 4WD (SVX auto????)

Webbie, I think another issue with this might be bulk. due to the width of the Subaru motor, you will have to drive back under it at some stage to get to the front or rear diff. I think the power to weight for the engine and gearbox combination would be low.
Have a look at the build up of the rodent in dirtsport magazine, or in here. It is running a camry transaxle facing north south in the rear (lhs front output running to the rear, RHS output to the front. This is very space efficient, requires no extra gearing (straight to diffs) and is cheap.
I have done some thinking about what could be done with a subaru motor but unless you get into bling bellhousing adapters etc they don't make much sense. also, most of the subaru motors are not that grunty until you get into the turbo stuff, some of which is fragile and the rest overpriced becuse of the WRX thing.
