Prado intercooler on TD Hilux

Post by MKMYDNR »

Doing some modifications to my 2004 hilux (1kz-te) and would like to squeeze some some more power out of my engine. I have looked at the safari Dtronic plugin which would give a nice modest increase in perfomance, however I know that the Prado was released with the same engine with the addition of an intercooler and achieves similar power outputs off the bat and even greater outputs with the installation of a Prado Dtronic.

Anyhow, my thought at the moment is to keep an eye out for a prado writeoff and flog the intercooler and install it to my hilux and then either buy a dtronic or remap my ECU to match. I have done some web searching on the subject with no luck, I am just wondering if it is possible, and if so, how difficult is this going to be.

First off good luck finding a Prado Td write off!
Then find someone that will seperate the intercooler
from the engine.

It is quite easy to do if you have all the parts.

You will need from Prado

Intercooler
Throttle body
pipe work from throttle body to intercooler
pipework from turbo to intercooler
All mounting brackets
Rocker cover as Hilux is too high

From a surf you will need rubber flex from intercooler to bonet vent.
Surf bonnet vent or nissan patrol.
Surf pipework from turbo inlet to aircleaner or have to custom make.
Surf heater hoses to clear intercooler.
Then you have to make it all fit.

It is cheaper to buy a complete air/water intercooler hilux kit from Denco and at least the air/water system will still work at low walking pace speeds.
Then agian I'm still not happy using an air/water intercooler with a diesel.
Those intercoolers better be strong and not get a hairline crack under vibrations as diesels don't really like water that much.

The Hilux (thailand) and Prado (Japan) ran a different type of ECU.
You will have to use the "piggy Back" system that suits your Hilux.
