i have no problem in buying off ebay or over the net, the question was more around dodgie software, seconds being sold cheaper.

Ask them, and always go with someone with LOTS of positive feedback, people wont hesitate to shat on someone if something is dodgey.

Again, if in doubt, search Google for Magellan dealers in USA and buy from shop... www.mall24-7.com is who I got a few thru now.

Has anyone checked out the GPS modules and software for the HP Ipaq ??

If they work pretty well good be a good option as you can use the ipaq for work and write it off on tax and then have the gps for weekend 4x4 trips

AussieCJ7 I did some testing on these last week and from what i saw they are good esp if you already have a PDA, It make the cost not so bad

I got a Garmin E-map a couple of months ago. Still only have the base map loaded at the moment but it still is a great thing. Looked at the Magellin stuff and though it is easy to use it is way too exy compared to the Garmin stuff....

I went for a Magellan Gold when in Canada in may. Saved $hitloads ! Cost me $400AUS and got the GST back. Checkout www.gpsoz.com.au for really helpful local advice and gear. Also www.gps4fun.com (US) and www.gpscentral.com (Can) for stuff.

Magellan Mapsend all of Aus map on 1 cd is now available. Really good track detail (poss 50000:1??) . Fits on a 256mb SD card.
Accessories I got for mine - case, 12v cable, 4x2000mah nimh batteries + charger ($25 for all @ Jaycar), multi fit phone holder for car ($5 - supacheap vs $5000000 for Magellan).

Very easy to use. Wanted mapping on handheld to use on the bike too. waterproof and lightweight (unlike laptop).Wish I had the extra $$ to get the Meridian colour.

Trick - if you buy a Meridian overseas with basemaps from Canada,US, Europe,etc Meridian want your first born to reprogramme the onboard 64mb memory. If anyone has instructions how to reprogramme it then virtual beers 4 u for it otherwise just upload and use the SD for better detailed Mapsend maps anyway.

Spud has seen my magellan.. It's the meridian gold. (grey in colour (WTF) Anyway.. Prefer it over the others as it's rugged and durable. Won't break if dropped ( meant for hikers) water RESISTANT and can be linked to a Laptop. Takes 2 AA batteries and lasts for ages. I got mine kinda hard wired (Ciggie plug under the dash) and once it gets plugged into the bracket, the external power takes over and saves the AA's!

Haven't had any probs with it, though the maps are too big to download. Have to D/L in sections. The maps are good quality and only a few times I've had no tracks showing when we were on a track! (Wheeny Creek Botch up trip) I'd have no probs in recommending this GPS to anyone. They rock!!!!

There's even a new map CD/SD card that has come out from GPSOZ 9www.gpsoz.com.au I think) They based in SYD on the Nth side I think. 249 gets you a map of OZ (detailed) and a card reader.. or sothing like that! Damn good deal if you look at the maps individually (approx 100 ea state!)

Hi,

I have the Magellan 315 for quite a few years now and no probs. I have run it using Oziexplorer on a laptop but now run it with OziCE version on my IPAQ with 5Gig PCMCIA harddrive for as many maps as I like.

http://www.gps4fun.com/ is where I got it from and I see they have the Magellan 310 for US$99 plus all the other models others have mentioned so might be worth checking out.
